1st one today 26-April-2010 so far so good but I know whats coming. A tad of anxiety at fist bolt down of goalie mask to table to treatment ....not sure why but got a scrip for a happy pill seeing as how I will have this 5 days a week for 6-7 weeks. Radiation was tough lost ability to swallow. had to learn to swallow from scratch not fun was on the tube for feeding for about two months post treatment, pain pills a little tough to kick weird dreams and stuff remember to take your stool softeners when you take your pain meds..........just one thing you don't need to add to your list of things to worry about if you know what I mean. 18 Months out now can eat alot of things now mouth still doesnt open like it did no big burgers or sandwhiches stilll keeping off the 60 pounds I wanted to lose of the 80 i took off 20 put back on for kicks lost too much. Taste is still screwed sweet still gone chocolate well forget that, acidy stuff, tomatoes, spicy stuff, just gone so Ive learned to eat a new way swallowing is still an adventure throat is much narrower for food and even pills, so have to be careful about everything still. But hey Im still here so the rest is worth it. Its not easy its not fun but its life after cancer every day is better than the day before and not as good as the next day so keep going after all your still around and thats why we fight to begin with. Any questions at all drop me a line
after 10 treatments I developed a sore throat and sores in my mouth. My tongue feels as if it was on fire.
Radiation in April, May, 2008...In general, I have been blessed! I have been very lucky to the extent that I dont have much saliva loss or other symptons. In 2010 I am currently having issues with radiation damage that include cramping in my neck muscles, difficultly maintaining my mouth opening and some slurring of my tongue. I am interested to know how others have dealt with these symptoms. In retrospect, I would have done more stretching exercises all along!!
Yes - 27 daily treatments beginning 2-16-11
Seven weeks, 5 days a week radiation, 35 treatments. Dry mouth, loss of saliva, only lost hair on my neck which was a positive. Hated the mask
Jaw tightens up when talking, need to stretch jaw muscles (stretch open mouth with sticks) 3 times daily (radiation). Need to fluoride teeth once a day. Lose saliva at night when I lay down and need to keep water around.
Radiation treatments 35, side effects severe like sunburn, sore throat, couldn't eat for months, swollowing very difficult. I'm going to loose my teeth decaying at a fast rate and nothing they can do for me. Dentures will be my next step and not sure if they will work with no saliva gland. Destroyed saliva glands, thyroid, and teeth.

IMRT Radiation to both sides of my neck to encompass the lymph nodes and base of tongue. My Oncologist was careful and did not want to risk that unseen cancer may have reached the base of the tongue so he treated as if it had to reduce risk of recurrence. Started Treatments on September 19th, 2011 twice a day for 6-weeks or total of 60-treatments. My last Treatment was November 2nd, 2011. The first 2-weeks were uneventful but week 3 to the end was painful and swallowing was a chore. No Peg Tube was used and I am glad I elected not to have one. My Oncologist and ENT also felt I should try not to use one to prevent swallowing issues in recovery. I am now 14-days out of my last treatment and my throat is improving finally.

The biggest side effect was damage to my taste and salivary glands, and to my soft plalate. Taste was completely gone from 4th week to one month following completion of treatment, then slowly returned (to some extent). Thick ropy mucus seems to be forever.

6 cisplatin tx, one every Monday, running simultaneously with radiation tx of 27 sessions, all of which ended on 11/14/12. Tolerated chemo well, it was a mild dose. Had Cytoxan in 1991 at age of 32 for systemic lupus nephritis and felt much worse then which was amazing because I'm a lot older now. Radiation did not bother me until 3rd week, at which time I lost my sense of taste. By the end of tx's, I was 103 lbs., but never weighed more than 120 lbs. anyway (i'm 5'6" but very small boned). All in all tolerated ok; it was after tx that I ran into a problem with mucousitis. Yuck.
