First surgery on 6.28.11 didn't obtain clean margins so a re-excision was made on 7.8.11. I got a MRSA infection which landed me in the hospital for five days in September and later, 10.14.11 my surgeron reopened me to clean out the incision and I was sent home with a wound vac (and home care nurses 3 x a week). Wound vac was ended on 12.21.11 but open incision of about 1" x 1" remained. Still healing as of 3.4.12 but oh, so much better.

2/16/2011 first scheduled surgery - endured preparation (i.e. radio isotope injection for lymph node mapping) mamogram for wire localization showed 2 new unknown masses. After surgeon review, 20 minutes prior to surgery - cancelled and advised I needed another biopsy. I was emotionally destroyed and broke down sobbing. I withdrew inward and was unable to speak to anyone, including my husband, for 2 days. I then underwent another (new and more involved) excruciating biopsy. Thankfully they were benign. Surgeon called on Thursday and surgery rescheduled following Monday 2/28/11. I was extremely quiet and reserved which bothered both my husband and surgeon. When asked what was going on, I said I didn't believe or trust anyone or anything, and until I was laying on the operating table, I could not get my hopes, belief up that my cancer was being removed. Surgery was a little more than I expected and had minor complications with extreme vomitting (anesthesia and pain meds) and stayed over-night. I had to have stomach meds 1/2 hour before taking any pain control meds to eliminate vomitting for next 4 weeks. Also woke up to severe pain in opposite shoulder (way I was positioned during surgery) and still have pain and numbness in thumb. I just began physical therapy last week, while there for daily radiation treatments. Will advise progress.
What Prostate Cancer Survivors said about their Cancer Surgeries.
attempted prostate removal in Dec 2010, it was abondoned due cancer already found outside the capsule, lymph nodes imlications
Nerve-sparing, open radical retropubic prostatectomy, Sept. 11, 2007. Side effect: genital shrinkage. Because of a pre-surgical scan indicating cancer may have been breaking out of my prostate, my right neurovascular bundle was removed -- that was half of the plumbing and wiring for my erections! I still have my left bundle, but it's been a long time since I've been able to get hard. Surgery also left me with no prostate and no seminal vesicles, which together produced my semen. I can no longer ejaculate and have 'dry' orgasms.

What Lung Cancer Survivors said about their Cancer Surgeries.
I had my left upper lung removed March 4, 2013 via VATS at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. Side effects? Well, not sure where to start. Fatigue for sure. What the medical community would call being 'uncomfortable'. And grateful. So grateful to have the tumor gone.

june 2014 ..none
1998 2/3 left lung removed nerve damage
The surgeon, an excellent surgeon, recommended a lobectomy on the right lung. Surgery was performed on July 13, 2009. The surgeon found the nodule was cancerous and had grown in an area of the lung damaged by a fungal infection, cryptocaucus. My recuperation period in the hospital was twelve days, the release prolonged due to a pneumothorax (collapsed lung). The treatment for this was the most painful thing I have EVER encountered. It's called Pleurodesis and consists of putting one of any number of chemicals (sclerosing agents or sclerosants) into the pleural space by way of the existing chest tube. The sclerosant irritates the pleurae which results in inflammation (pleuritis) and causes the pleurae to stick together. I don't recommend this to cure boredom but it did work!!
2009 hysterectomy cancer "leiomyosarcoma" found in muscle wall. drs said no treatment needed just follow up in 6 mo. 2012 went in to er for rib and stomach pain, shortness of breath had mri and biopsy done diagnosis stage 4 lung cancer leiomyosarcoma 10/2013 my cancer has spread to pelvic region

What Bladder Cancer Survivors said about their Cancer Surgeries.
They removed the tumor by going throught the urethral tube. October 30th 07 was my surgery date and I had a great doctor. I had chemo injected into my bladder right after surgery as a preventive method. I had a hysterectomy in Feb 08 as a preventive surgery because of where the tumor had been removed from. The recovery for this was 12 weeks long and very painful. Still have side-effects from that last surgery.

Excisional Biopsy on January 18th, results came back as no evidence of lymphoma. Still felt sick, had another biopsy on February 18th and then got diagnosed with lymphoma.
I've had so many surgeries it's not even funny. From the day the doctor called my mom and told her to get me to a hospital NOW, until today, I have been relentlessly tortured in every which way possible for the greater good or some bullshit like that. I had two biopsies in the same spot, one was with just shots and no numbing medication and ther other was actual open surgery. Then they had to clean it out because they didn't check it and it got infected and couldn't heal properly. Then it finally did, but then they had to open me up again to put my port in my chest but since my diagnosis, I've stopped working out. All I can do is eat and eat and eat because of the steroids they're giving me so Im growing immensely! Well, that tilted the port in my chest and they almost can't get to it so they may need to cut me open a fourth time. Everytime I go into surgery they put a long scope down my throat into my chest so I can breath is I start to slide. Well when they take it out, you wont be able to swallow your foods for the next 3 days or so. Waking up initially is scary to because there's something covoring your entire face and all you can see is up and hear groggy voices. you're in a lot of pain to.

Scheduled for an open partial nephretomy on April 21st, 2011
Nephrectomy of the left kidney April 09. The tumor was only 3cm but involved 6.5cm including cortical swelling. Due to its location it destroyed the collective duct and the hole kidney had to be remove along with the adrenal gland. The normal side effects from a nephrectomy are present. An unexpected side effect is irretractable hiccups, for the past three years that still proceed. Due to my "stone former" status I have to follow the precautionary diet to prevent me from forming new kidney stones
Laparoscopic removal of right kidney. 27 January 2014

June 26 will have a Da Vinci Robotic surgery to remove the tumor. Didn't realize that if they had to take the whole kidney they can just enlarget the hole and sqeeze it out. That helps as I am saving up leave and the recovery still would be short (~2 weeks).

Open distal pancreatectomy and splenectomy is the type of surgery I had for my pancreatic cancer in January of 07..side effects..digestion issues....especially for the spicier foods that I love and anything gassy...peppers,cucumbers, onions, broccoli, and cabbage..must stay at a minimum and I hate this if I were to put any combo of 2 or more of these things in a salad I would be extremely ill. when I first came home from the hospital finishing a tv dinner was often more than I could handle. The good thing is the surgery actually improved my blood sugars and reduced my need for insulin.
The pain I see him go threw... It just about kills me...
August 2004 tumor removed from pancreas and took part of pancreas with it and removed the spleen. My father was told that he would not have to have chemo and that he would live a normal life that they got all the cancer and that was it. We should have made him get a second opinion you see the cancer that he was diagnosed with is very rare about 1 in 25 million people. the doctors didn't know enough about it. well two years later he started having the same symtoms as before very low blood sugars (he is not diabetic) so when he went back to the doctors they discovered that he had several very large tumors on and in his liver. We took him to MAYO's where he had a seven hour long surgery and had several complications, PE, and phrenic artery bleed. We know now that this cancer can not be cured or treated with chemo and that the tumors will be comming back. We just got back from Mayo's this last week and they found 2 more new spots on his CT. We go back in Jan. He is not ready for another surgery it has only been 7mos since the last one. I would love to hear from any one who knows anything about this cancer.

What Ovarian Cancer Survivors said about their Cancer Surgeries.
I had surgery on Dec 27,2010. It went well. I had a rough couple of days which would be normal. I went back to work after work and went to my Doctors app. alone due to the fact that he thought it was only a cyst and everything was just fine. That is when I was told that it was a Granulosa cell tumor. I started this journey that nobody wants to take. I have had lots of blood work, cat scan, ultrasounds and biopsys. I now have a spot on my right ovary.

What Thyroid Cancer Survivors said about their Cancer Surgeries.
Total thyroidectomy on May 8, 2008. Found cancer on both sides of my thyroid and into my lymph nodes. Incision area is sore and itchy. Met with the surgeon on May 16 and he removed the bandages. Advises me to use sunscreen daily and my scar shouldn't be as noticeable. Also had a hard time swallowing for a few days after surgery. Most likely caused by the breathing tube inserted during surgery. A week later and I can swallow without pain. The week after surgery I would feel great for awhile and then become really tired. My calcium level did dip a little and I have been taking calcium supplements that make me nauseous.
Hello i just had my surgery on Friday November 5th, I had a tumor that was going to be removed upon finishing the surgery the surgeon told me that he had to remove my whole thyroid because the tumor had Cancer. I'm still very dizzy, depressed have a lot of body ache. Feel drained and very tired.

Surgery: Craniotomy at Right Temporal Love for full tumour removal Date: October 21, 2010 Hospital Stay: 4 days Side Effects: Initially the pressure in my head was really bad but that was due to swelling of the brain from surgery and I was on steroids to control that. The steroids that I was on however gave me major hallucinations to the point that I tried escaping the hospital on one occassion. This of course was controlled by a dosage change when it was brought to the attention of my attending physicians. 4 months post surgery:I still get horrible headaches. I find that it hurts to lay back and put full pressure on my head at night and many mornings I wake up with headaches. I was informed that this is normal and will last for some time so really you just have to learn some coping techniques to get by. I sometimes still get what I call "skull pain" that feels like there is pressure around where the incision was but that again is normal. 6 months post surgery: I am no longer getting headaches and only get a pressure behind my right eye when the Barometric pressure changes.

October 2010- colonoscopy showed a "polyp" too large to remove at the beginning of my colon near the cecum. Continued working and named polyp "Albert" December 3rd 2010- scheduled for a "SILS" procedure: single incision laparoscopic surgery to remove "Albert", supposed to be back to work in 4 weeks. Yeah, right... Wake up to the Dr telling me he had to do an open surgery so he could get at my liver and lymph nodes. Some lymph nodes removed but liver has too many lesions to do anything. My polyp was trying to punch thru the colon and grab my gall bladder, luckily it wasn't successful. Went from being "no big deal polyp" to "you have stage 4 colon cancer" Was told an oncologist would be in to see me the next day. Wasn't going to be able to eat until I passed gas, nothing but ice chips, morphine pump, walks down the hall and breathing treatments for 4 days. My only surgeries other than the lymph node biopsy I had - were all for ports to be placed. I've had 3 total. One through my entire first treatment, and so far 2 for this time around. My first port was placed fine, except that I got a collapsed lung from where the surgeon cut my lung on accident. 2nd port just always gave us trouble, and kept getting stuck until one day it just quit working. Would flush, nothing. Had to be replaced. 3rd port - it works great but the Dr had such a hard time getting it in that a lot of blood went down around my lung causing me a lot of pain for about a month every time I took a breath. We actually had to stop treatment for a month until this went away.
port a cath x 2 bma (cant remember how often)
I received lumbar punctures (spinal taps) weekly for about 12 weeks. Headaches were common.

i had a colonoscopy in Sept of 2014. They found a small lesion just above the dentate line. This was termed AIN 2. In Nov of 2014 they did a biopsy on what they termed a lesion and then destroyed it with electrocautery. The biopsy showed an invasive squamous cell cancer. It was moderately differentiated and it was arising within a background of high- grade dysphasia. The Doctor didn't notify me with results for three weeks. He then called and said I have invasive cancer and would call back in a week after he met with his cancer board. I called him a week later and decided to change doctorrs and went to a research hospital. The new doctor said he thought chemo and radiation at this point was an extreme measure and we should watch it every three months. Did CT scan and MRI both normal. Another spot was identified in May 2016. Excision was preformed June 2016. Didn't get clean margins and that lymph- vascular invasion was present.

Hysterectomy went great, pain managed with a morphine pump. Overnight stay. 3 week recovery. Cancer discovered post TAH. 5 weeks post TAH had 12 Lymph nodes removed and Omentum removed. That surgery was a nightmare for me. GYN ONC did robotic surgery, I had 5 new incisions after just having 3. No pain management post op. I managed better at home by taking twice the prescribed Norco. Day 7 I finally got dressed. Still in lots of pain. Have numb areas on my legs though they are not swollen. Abdomen very swollen. I think I might have a hernia. I see the Doc in 4 days. All my biopsies were benign.

Mastectomy in Aug.'08 because dcis was in 2 places. Lumpectomy not an option and besides, I didn't have to have chemo or any other after treatment. Endometrial cancer caused complete hysterectomy in August '09. I am just now finished with 6 months of chemo and 28 radiation treatments. Both were hell. Chemo put me in the hospital the first two treatments. Dehydration, near kidney failure, hallucinations, dysentery, metal mouth made me not want to eat or drink. If I can say it again : Hydrate all day every day!

Laryngectomy; total removal of voice box February 25, 2016 7 hour surgery Second tumor removal/ Salvage Laryngectomy done July 25, 2016
I had to have an Embolisation first, which unfortunately took alot longer than what they thought, as the tumor was so big and had a major blood supply going to it. My operation was held on my 30th birthday, so unfortunately it will be a birthday I will always remember for the wrong reasons. My operation took 12 hours, and I was kept asleep for a further 12. When I woke up, I was told that they had to leave part of the tumor in due to side effects it may cause if taken out. I was and still am unable to swallow so at first I had a feeding tube running down through my nose, then after a week I had a peg fitted. I have been told that there is a possibility I may never swallow again, and I am finding this so hard to come to terms with.
