Breast Cancer Surgeries

What Breast Cancer Survivors said about their Cancer Surgeries.

they put the blue dye in my live diseased breast on 04-26-04, then as they put me to sleep they acccidently gave me a shot of adrenalyn (sp) so I had to redo the blue dye on 04-28-04 on my 18th anniversary after they had checked to make sure there was no cardiac danger.
Lumpectomy and bilateral breast reduction 9/22/11. Procedure was done as a day patient and was extremely painful.
I was told today, I must have a rt mastectomy with lymph node resection.
April 22, 2009 - mastectomy. I had two drains in for approx. four weeks. That was a drag because the surgeon wouldn't let me drive as long as the drains were in. After surgery I received the good news that I actually had two tumors, the large one being ILC and some lymph node involvement. (I've got to say, when the oncologist's office called with the "you've got two different types of cancer news" I thought for sure I'd wind up in a jar on some med student's desk somewhere). I started to have reconstructive surgery, but changed my mind. That freaked the plastic surgeon out, but that's one decision I haven't regretted.
Mastectomy and reconstruction for left side. Breast lift for right. I had the latissimus dorsi flap reconstruction. I had an expander put in because I was going to have radiation. This surgery was October of 2004.Later, I had the implant put in. That was January of 2006. I think having the muscle in my back redirected to make a pouch for my implant was more painful than the mastectomy.
I had a modified radical mastectomy on May 24, 1990. I didn't have any side effects. No pain pills needed at all.

The surgeon, an excellent surgeon, recommended a lobectomy on the right lung. Surgery was performed on July 13, 2009. The surgeon found the nodule was cancerous and had grown in an area of the lung damaged by a fungal infection, cryptocaucus. My recuperation period in the hospital was twelve days, the release prolonged due to a pneumothorax (collapsed lung). The treatment for this was the most painful thing I have EVER encountered. It's called Pleurodesis and consists of putting one of any number of chemicals (sclerosing agents or sclerosants) into the pleural space by way of the existing chest tube. The sclerosant irritates the pleurae which results in inflammation (pleuritis) and causes the pleurae to stick together. I don't recommend this to cure boredom but it did work!!
I had my left upper lung removed March 4, 2013 via VATS at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. Side effects? Well, not sure where to start. Fatigue for sure. What the medical community would call being 'uncomfortable'. And grateful. So grateful to have the tumor gone.

Bladder Cancer Surgeries

What Bladder Cancer Survivors said about their Cancer Surgeries.

They removed the tumor by going throught the urethral tube. October 30th 07 was my surgery date and I had a great doctor. I had chemo injected into my bladder right after surgery as a preventive method. I had a hysterectomy in Feb 08 as a preventive surgery because of where the tumor had been removed from. The recovery for this was 12 weeks long and very painful. Still have side-effects from that last surgery.

Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma Cancer Surgeries

What Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma Cancer Survivors said about their Cancer Surgeries.

Partial Gastrectomy, Vagotomy, Pyloroplasty in October 2008 to remove tumor and adjacent lymph nodes.
I've had so many surgeries it's not even funny. From the day the doctor called my mom and told her to get me to a hospital NOW, until today, I have been relentlessly tortured in every which way possible for the greater good or some bullshit like that. I had two biopsies in the same spot, one was with just shots and no numbing medication and ther other was actual open surgery. Then they had to clean it out because they didn't check it and it got infected and couldn't heal properly. Then it finally did, but then they had to open me up again to put my port in my chest but since my diagnosis, I've stopped working out. All I can do is eat and eat and eat because of the steroids they're giving me so Im growing immensely! Well, that tilted the port in my chest and they almost can't get to it so they may need to cut me open a fourth time. Everytime I go into surgery they put a long scope down my throat into my chest so I can breath is I start to slide. Well when they take it out, you wont be able to swallow your foods for the next 3 days or so. Waking up initially is scary to because there's something covoring your entire face and all you can see is up and hear groggy voices. you're in a lot of pain to.

Biopsy's (lymph node and bone marrow)
Other than a port installation, I avoided surgery - I was scheduled fora THIRD biopsy (surgical) as it took them 1 whole month to diagnose me after 2 needle biopsies! I was spooked to get a port implanted, but it was the best thing I could do and made life much simpler during chemo. I wear my port insert/removal scars as my badge of courage.

Open distal pancreatectomy and splenectomy is the type of surgery I had for my pancreatic cancer in January of 07..side effects..digestion issues....especially for the spicier foods that I love and anything gassy...peppers,cucumbers, onions, broccoli, and cabbage..must stay at a minimum and I hate this if I were to put any combo of 2 or more of these things in a salad I would be extremely ill. when I first came home from the hospital finishing a tv dinner was often more than I could handle. **update** had TT and the surgery was successful. I advice you to sit back and observe this site first before the final result then you can ramble on. I did ramble on thru cancer scare before final result so I regret it. If it comes up negative, you won't get over the cancer scare for the rest of your life. Mark my words.

Really tired and sore, hot flashes, but mostly just really tired. I'm now off of my medds and on the no sodium torture dietawaiting RAI treatment at the end of the month!
Diagnosis July 1, 2010...Remainder thyroidectomy and radical neck dissection July 20, 2010....
Excision of lymph node from right side of neck 7/21/2009; resultant pathology showed metastatic papillary carcinoma of thyroid in a lympht node. TT and right modified neck dissection 10/26/2009; multilple positive lymph nodes and primary tumor identified in right lobe of thyroid- papillary ca, follicular variant, only 4.5mm, and tiny .2mm met in left lobe of thyroid. Resulting side effect: hypocalcemia, hopefully temporary, requiring some iv infusions while in hospital, and continued p.o. supplements for now
Since half my thryoid was substernal and huge, it wouldn't come out through the standard thyroid incision. I had to have a sternotomy along with a partial right lobe thyroidectomy. When the pathology report came back showing cancer, they had to remove the remaining portion of my right lobe in a second surgery two months later.
The surgeon removed the right side of my thyroid. The medicine I was given to knock me out during surgery made me SICK AS A DOG. After surgery it was determined that I have cancer. I will soon be getting second side of thyroid removed and them going through radiation treatment.

Surgery to remove a tumor in neck. Second surgery in same place a week later due to my neck swelling.
PICC Line & Hickman Line placement.
My only surgeries other than the lymph node biopsy I had - were all for ports to be placed. I've had 3 total. One through my entire first treatment, and so far 2 for this time around. My first port was placed fine, except that I got a collapsed lung from where the surgeon cut my lung on accident. 2nd port just always gave us trouble, and kept getting stuck until one day it just quit working. Would flush, nothing. Had to be replaced. 3rd port - it works great but the Dr had such a hard time getting it in that a lot of blood went down around my lung causing me a lot of pain for about a month every time I took a breath. We actually had to stop treatment for a month until this went away.
port a cath x 2 bma (cant remember how often)
I received lumbar punctures (spinal taps) weekly for about 12 weeks. Headaches were common.
A few days after xray, I was admitted for a biopsy of the mediastinal tumour in my chest and a bonemarrow biopsy. 2 days later we met with my haematologist, Dr Du Toit, at Constantiberg Medi Clinic.

Robotic tonsil and tumer removal and Neck disection to remove lymph nodes
Surgery was done December 27th. Removal of right tonsil and neck dissection removed 34 lymph nodes which 3 were were positive. There are some slight issues with my shoulder and arm not having full range of motion but this is being worked out through physical therapy. 7 weeks post surgery and the swallowing is totally back. Had to have 5 teeth removed prior to radiation treatment though and that was a minor setback.
Surgery was conducted on Nov 8th 2010 and lasted 8 1/2 hours. Surgery consisted of partial tonsilectomy (left tonsil) and removal of 40 lymph nodes. Remained in ICU 12 days; 10 days heavily sedated due to "being a bad patient" (combative). Could not drink liquids without them shooting through my nostrils for 2 weeks. I could manage one small ice chip but not two. A PET scan revealed one lymph node that probably was malignant. This necessitated radiation treatment.
Radical Tonsilactomy
26 Feb 2008 radical neck dissection of right side of neck, Bilateral Tonsillectomy. The neck dissection took the right jugglar, muscle, 80 nodes, the 12th spinal accessory nerve, which paralyzed my right trapezius muscle which has resulted in the right should slumping forward somewhat, asome range of motion issues. The bilateral tonsillectomy, too the tonsillar pillar and to ensure that I had a clean margin, around the right tonsil, the 5th nerve was removed which handle the function of the right side of my tounge, which has faciltated some difficulties in swallowing.

Endometrial-Uterine Cancer Surgeries

What Endometrial-Uterine Cancer Survivors said about their Cancer Surgeries.

Hysterectomy with bso June 25, 2010. Laproscopic surgery. Lymph node dissection. Surgeon said he thought they caught it early, as in most cases. Pathology came back July 6. Stage IIIC2 with positive nodes in pelvis & periaoritic. Seriously? Yes :(
Egg Retrieval [fought for reproductive rights before surgery] on April 20th, 2014. 11 eggs were retrieved, 10 were mature, 4 were fertilized, only 1 made it to blastocyst stage to be frozen, my fiance and I fondly refer to it as "icicle", and we're hoping it will grow into a baby next summer. I had mostly bloating from that surgery, but the medicine I was one to STIM [Lupron, Brevelle, and Menopur] gave me bad migraines. Da Vinci [Robot-Assisted] Laproscopic Hystrectomy and Bilateral Salpingo-Oophorectomy on April 20th, 2014. Not too many side-effects- itching/burning around the incisions on my abdomen, gas pain- mostly in my abdomen, abdomen pain- but it feels mostly like I went to the gym and did way too many sit-ups, so it's unpleasant but not unbearable. I have bloating, which is irksome, but that's mostly "swelly belly" from the gas and incisions.

Complete hystrectomy on 12/3/2010 with removal of 11 lymph nodes Vaginal cuff recurrence 3/2011-metastatic endometrial adenocarcinoma
Mastectomy in Aug.'08 because dcis was in 2 places. Lumpectomy not an option and besides, I didn't have to have chemo or any other after treatment. Endometrial cancer caused complete hysterectomy in August '09. I am just now finished with 6 months of chemo and 28 radiation treatments. Both were hell. Chemo put me in the hospital the first two treatments. Dehydration, near kidney failure, hallucinations, dysentery, metal mouth made me not want to eat or drink. If I can say it again : Hydrate all day every day!
Hysterectomy was not possible. June 2010 bowel obstruction - colostomy
Jan 2009- no side effects
I will be having surgery tomorrow morning at 6 am, December 21st, to make an opening in my uterus to allow them access to the tumor. I will be having high dose radiation twice daily for 3 days.

2/25/2016 Robotic. No major side effects. Post-surgery constipation (thanks to a few days of opioids) then the opposite, then balance, finally. This seems to be the usual course of recovery. Make sure you have a pillow for your belly for the ride home from the hospital. Avoid dairy products at all costs.

Sarcoma Cancer Surgeries

What Sarcoma Cancer Survivors said about their Cancer Surgeries.

Limb sparing surgery Feb 2010. The tumour was cut out of my thigh with clear margins. I didnt need an amputation.
Surgery to remove tumor on 10/17/14
Nov 26, 2014 an exploratory surgery was completed in an attempt to resect the 4.1 cm tumor that was encasing into my small bowel. Once inside, Dr.'s then realized the tumor was surrounded by important arteries in the mesentery area, thus the tumor could not be resected more than 20 %.
Had surgery to remove the tumor from his calf on September 8, 2010. Surgery was successful with clean margins, but given the grade of his tumor, the doctors at Phoenix Children's Hospital (PCH) felt it was imperative to enroll him in the Children's Oncology Group clinical trial, which gave a specific protocol treatment.
August 26, 2010 - Reinforcement rod placed in left femur
Had surgery 2013. Half of right lung removed, 18 lymph node removed. Upper back pain. Shortness of breath.
Unable to have any surgery due to where tumor is locates and the size - not able to get clear margins unless they chopped off my whole left leg and up above my hip, which they did not do. I did have minor surgery in Jan 2009 to insert Port a Cath, nag again in Dec 2009 to remove the Port.

October 4, 1974 was when my world changed forever. I was 16 years old and had radical neck surgery, removal of half the lower jaw - the odds of survival were razor thin...
On December 30 1999 the surgeon took out a large tumor from Nicole's left forearm and after a biopsy diagnosed her with Rhabdomayosarcoma, a rare, juvenile cancer that strikes one in a million children, mostly boys under 10.

June 2012: Full tumor resection with clear, negative margins from the right parapharynx
Bone marrow biopsy and a biopsy of the tumor in my chest
I am inoperable due to the 30 pound tumor is on my spine connects to my ribs and is 3 inches from my left lung. it would be too risky so i have currently been on 10 different chemotherapy drugs in the past 4 years so far no luck. hopefully soon there will be. it is an advanced sarcoma, but im keeping in the fight. this is the 2nd time if id cancer. at 18 i had a full colectomy on 9/13/05, at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. I was given a temporary illeostomy until my small intestine was long enough to reach my rectum and a J-Pouch was able to be formed. The surgery for me lasted 9 hours. I was given anastesia. Originally, it was supposed to be a laporascopic surgery but the doctor was unable to perform the surgery in that matter. An incision was made right under my breast bone all the way down to right above my vaginal area. When the incision was stapled I had a total of 56 staples. After surgery, it was very hard to sit up and get out of bed. I spent a total of 8 days in the hospital and was given plenty of pain medication. The doctors and nurses were excellent and really did the best they could to help me recover and keep me as comfortable as possible. I was not used to having an illeostomy bag with a stoma, but as the time went by I adjusted and knew it was not going to be permanent. Most of all, I knew it saved my life. My colon had over 600 polyps on it by the time I was 18, ranging from tiny to big and they were indeed cancerous. I waited four years to have surgery due to the colon not being fully grown when I was 14. After the colon was removed, I did not undergo chemotherapy because my doctor felt all the cancer was gone. Tests were done and it was confirmed, I was cancer free!
Still to be determined.
Surgery in 2008 to remove tumor and removal of my spleen and some pancreas, surgery in 2011 to remove tumor, awaiting decision by surgeon to see if surgery is an option this time Feb 2015.

December 16, 2011 ... I had day surgery to have my lump removed, the surgery went well, other than some internal bleeding in the area that ended up being fine. I healed well.

I had my surgery February 7, 2011 and I didn't have any side effects from it. They tried to take the tumor out laparoscopically but the size of the tumor didn't allow for that and they have to give me a bikini cut

Surgery: Friday February 8th 2008 Scar from below right ear to below my chin. Also removal of my right tonsil. My cheek felt numb for several weeks like when you come back from the dentist after getting novacaine. Now sensation is coming back. It feels a bit tight, but the least of my worries :) Official status is TX, N2b, MO. Meaning unknown primary, several lymph nodes, surgeon removed all visible cancer.
I had to have an Embolisation first, which unfortunately took alot longer than what they thought, as the tumor was so big and had a major blood supply going to it. My operation was held on my 30th birthday, so unfortunately it will be a birthday I will always remember for the wrong reasons. My operation took 12 hours, and I was kept asleep for a further 12. When I woke up, I was told that they had to leave part of the tumor in due to side effects it may cause if taken out. I was and still am unable to swallow so at first I had a feeding tube running down through my nose, then after a week I had a peg fitted. I have been told that there is a possibility I may never swallow again, and I am finding this so hard to come to terms with.
Removed all teeth because of location of cancer any infection of a tooth for the rest of his life would not heal & cause loss of jaw bone.
