Bilateral mastectomy with reconstruction Oct 27, 2015. Not healing well. Returned to OR to have expanders removed and cleaned out and new ones placed on December 29, 2015. Pain and anxiety are my major concerns
Breast cancer No. 1. Surgery left me with some lymph oedema in the left arm, but the exercises helped and this is now barely noticeable. Leiomyosarcoma 2009: Can still sometimes feel the 'join' where my guts were resectioned and this can be a little uncomfortable. Breast cancer No. 2 2011: The nature of the reconstruction made it really hard to stand straight for about 3 months after the op. Also a tiny part of the new boob 'died' as it lost its blood supply temporarily - its taken 6 months to heal fully but is ok now.

The surgeon, an excellent surgeon, recommended a lobectomy on the right lung. Surgery was performed on July 13, 2009. The surgeon found the nodule was cancerous and had grown in an area of the lung damaged by a fungal infection, cryptocaucus. My recuperation period in the hospital was twelve days, the release prolonged due to a pneumothorax (collapsed lung). The treatment for this was the most painful thing I have EVER encountered. It's called Pleurodesis and consists of putting one of any number of chemicals (sclerosing agents or sclerosants) into the pleural space by way of the existing chest tube. The sclerosant irritates the pleurae which results in inflammation (pleuritis) and causes the pleurae to stick together. I don't recommend this to cure boredom but it did work!!
lower left lobe of lung removed plus 15 lymph nodes, 2 of which were positive

Bladder Cancer Surgeries

What Bladder Cancer Survivors said about their Cancer Surgeries.

They removed the tumor by going throught the urethral tube. October 30th 07 was my surgery date and I had a great doctor. I had chemo injected into my bladder right after surgery as a preventive method. I had a hysterectomy in Feb 08 as a preventive surgery because of where the tumor had been removed from. The recovery for this was 12 weeks long and very painful. Still have side-effects from that last surgery.

I've had so many surgeries it's not even funny. From the day the doctor called my mom and told her to get me to a hospital NOW, until today, I have been relentlessly tortured in every which way possible for the greater good or some bullshit like that. I had two biopsies in the same spot, one was with just shots and no numbing medication and ther other was actual open surgery. Then they had to clean it out because they didn't check it and it got infected and couldn't heal properly. Then it finally did, but then they had to open me up again to put my port in my chest but since my diagnosis, I've stopped working out. All I can do is eat and eat and eat because of the steroids they're giving me so Im growing immensely! Well, that tilted the port in my chest and they almost can't get to it so they may need to cut me open a fourth time. Everytime I go into surgery they put a long scope down my throat into my chest so I can breath is I start to slide. Well when they take it out, you wont be able to swallow your foods for the next 3 days or so. Waking up initially is scary to because there's something covoring your entire face and all you can see is up and hear groggy voices. you're in a lot of pain to.

colostomy; 8/3/2007 none
Will be having surgery on December 18th 2015.
I originally had a colon excision with 18" inches of my colon removed. I had a colostomy to allow my colon to heal. I was able to have my colostomy reversed 6-months later!!!! Yippee!!! I credit a lot of my survival to having a wonderful colorectal surgeon, Dr. Lee Raley!!! I am sure there are a lot of wonderful surgeons out there, but having a surgeon who specializes in the colon was a big benefit to me. He is "up" on all the latest colon caner treatments & surgery techniques and I was so lucky to find him.
Bowel resection in August with (hopefully) temporary colostomy bag. Liver resection with gall blader removal October
Removal of 7 in" of colon. 4 out of 16 lymph nodes were affected. Surgery recovery was slow. Port "installed" Feb. 13, 2013.

Emergency colostomy on 9/11/09. No real side effects other than the basic lifestyle changes that a colostomy can bring.
Sepember 30 removal and resection of 14cm of colon and rectum. 5 of 20 lymph nodes were infected. Because of type 2 diabetes recovery was slow and developed an abscess from where the resection did not heal. A Cook drain was installed to drain the abscess. After 7 months the abscess has not fully closed and I await the doctor's decision to "glue" the abscess and resection. Because of the difficulty of the surgery I am using an Ileostomy. Because of the lack of healing I am no longer eligible for adjuvant chemotherapy.
Coming soon/rectal resection.
I had my ascending colon removed on July 2nd 2013.
Not planned. Cancer will spread too fast if chemo is stopped at my stage.
October 2010- colonoscopy showed a "polyp" too large to remove at the beginning of my colon near the cecum. Biopsy did not show any cancer, just abnormal cells and I was told the polyp would need removed either way. Continued working and named polyp "Albert" December 3rd 2010- scheduled for a "SILS" procedure: single incision laparoscopic surgery to remove "Albert", supposed to be back to work in 4 weeks. Yeah, right... Wake up to the Dr telling me he had to do an open surgery so he could get at my liver and lymph nodes. Some lymph nodes removed but liver has too many lesions to do anything. My polyp was trying to punch thru the colon and grab my gall bladder, luckily it wasn't successful. Went from being "no big deal polyp" to "you have stage 4 colon cancer" Was told an oncologist would be in to see me the next day. Wasn't going to be able to eat until I passed gas, nothing but ice chips, morphine pump, walks down the hall and breathing treatments for 4 days. December 28th: surgery to put in a port for chemo, with first treatment to be given the 29th (next day)
Thorasic Surgery on April 13th, 2010. -Confirmed metastisis:( Rectal surgery was on May 11, 2010. reconnect of the rectum, reversal surgery tbd .... Port surgery June 2010

Colposocopy May 2009, LEEP June 2009: Extremely painful getting the painkiller shots (aparently I have a sensitive cervix). The recouperation was fine but I asked for pain meds and that helped sleep it off. Just a suggestion. Cone Biopsy July 2009: Opted to 'go under' this time and it went fine. If you have good insurance and are considering it I reccomend it. I woke up, went home, slept a lot and was back to normal within a couple days.

Surgery to remove a tumor in neck. Second surgery in same place a week later due to my neck swelling.
PICC Line & Hickman Line placement.
My only surgeries other than the lymph node biopsy I had - were all for ports to be placed. I've had 3 total. One through my entire first treatment, and so far 2 for this time around. My first port was placed fine, except that I got a collapsed lung from where the surgeon cut my lung on accident. 2nd port just always gave us trouble, and kept getting stuck until one day it just quit working. Would flush, nothing. Had to be replaced. 3rd port - it works great but the Dr had such a hard time getting it in that a lot of blood went down around my lung causing me a lot of pain for about a month every time I took a breath. We actually had to stop treatment for a month until this went away.
port a cath x 2 bma (cant remember how often)
I received lumbar punctures (spinal taps) weekly for about 12 weeks. Headaches were common.
A few days after xray, I was admitted for a biopsy of the mediastinal tumour in my chest and a bonemarrow biopsy. 2 days later we met with my haematologist, Dr Du Toit, at Constantiberg Medi Clinic.

Inserted port, may 2015
i had a colonoscopy in Sept of 2014. They found a small lesion just above the dentate line. This was termed AIN 2. In Nov of 2014 they did a biopsy on what they termed a lesion and then destroyed it with electrocautery. The biopsy showed an invasive squamous cell cancer. It was moderately differentiated and it was arising within a background of high- grade dysphasia. The Doctor didn't notify me with results for three weeks. He then called and said I have invasive cancer and would call back in a week after he met with his cancer board. I called him a week later and decided to change doctorrs and went to a research hospital. The new doctor said he thought chemo and radiation at this point was an extreme measure and we should watch it every three months. Did CT scan and MRI both normal. Another spot was identified in May 2016. Excision was preformed June 2016. Didn't get clean margins and that lymph- vascular invasion was present.
I had what the surgeon said was a "skin tag" on my rectum that was removed On July 22, 2010, along with some exploratory surgery to remove adhesions on my left side and they drained a cyst on my right ovary. I was scheduled to see my surgeon on Aug 5th but received a phone call asking me to come in on July 28th, never in a millions years did I think I would be told that I have stage 1 anal cancer, I am scheduled to see an oncologist on Aug. 4th, so for now it is just waiting and wondering. I am not sure of the size or what course of treatment I will be going threw just yet.

The bilateral tonsillectomy, too the tonsillar pillar and to ensure that I had a clean margin, around the right tonsil, the 5th nerve was removed which handle the function of the right side of my tounge, which has faciltated some difficulties in swallowing.

tonsillectomy
Only surgery so far was the FNA and the installation of a mediport. FNA was easy, I was awake and talking to the doctor the entire time. Mediport install use "concious sedation" but I fell asleep before they started. A lot more bruising than I expected from talking to the doctors and nurses before the operation. I find the mediport a bit intrusive, but I imagine I will get used to it (it has only been in for a week, and the incision has not healed).

Hysterectomy with bso June 25, 2010. Laproscopic surgery. Lymph node dissection. Surgeon said he thought they caught it early, as in most cases. Pathology came back July 6. Stage IIIC2 with positive nodes in pelvis & periaoritic. Seriously? Yes :(
October 7, 2011--Other than short-term digestive issues, recovered swiftly.

Hysterectomy on July 1, 2010.
Hysterectomy went great, pain managed with a morphine pump. Overnight stay. 3 week recovery. Cancer discovered post TAH. 5 weeks post TAH had 12 Lymph nodes removed and Omentum removed. That surgery was a nightmare for me. GYN ONC did robotic surgery, I had 5 new incisions after just having 3. No pain management post op. I managed better at home by taking twice the prescribed Norco. Day 7 I finally got dressed. Still in lots of pain. Have numb areas on my legs though they are not swollen. Abdomen very swollen. I think I might have a hernia. I see the Doc in 4 days. All my biopsies were benign.

Sarcoma Cancer Surgeries

What Sarcoma Cancer Survivors said about their Cancer Surgeries.

Shoulder Replacement Right Lung Wedge Resection
I am inoperable due to the 30 pound tumor is on my spine connects to my ribs and is 3 inches from my left lung. it would be too risky so i have currently been on 10 different chemotherapy drugs in the past 4 years so far no luck. hopefully soon there will be. it is an advanced sarcoma, but im keeping in the fight. this is the 2nd time if id cancer. at 18 i had a full colectomy on 9/13/05, at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. I was given a temporary illeostomy until my small intestine was long enough to reach my rectum and a J-Pouch was able to be formed. The surgery for me lasted 9 hours. I was given anastesia. Originally, it was supposed to be a laporascopic surgery but the doctor was unable to perform the surgery in that matter. An incision was made right under my breast bone all the way down to right above my vaginal area. When the incision was stapled I had a total of 56 staples. After surgery, it was very hard to sit up and get out of bed. I spent a total of 8 days in the hospital and was given plenty of pain medication. The doctors and nurses were excellent and really did the best they could to help me recover and keep me as comfortable as possible. I was not used to having an illeostomy bag with a stoma, but as the time went by I adjusted and knew it was not going to be permanent. Most of all, I knew it saved my life. My colon had over 600 polyps on it by the time I was 18, ranging from tiny to big and they were indeed cancerous. I waited four years to have surgery due to the colon not being fully grown when I was 14. After the colon was removed, I did not undergo chemotherapy because my doctor felt all the cancer was gone. Tests were done and it was confirmed, I was cancer free!
June 2012: Full tumor resection with clear, negative margins from the right parapharynx
December 16, 2011 ... I had day surgery to have my lump removed, the surgery went well, other than some internal bleeding in the area that ended up being fine. I healed well.

Unable to have any surgery due to where tumor is locates and the size - not able to get clear margins unless they chopped off my whole left leg and up above my hip, which they did not do. I did have minor surgery in Jan 2009 to insert Port a Cath, nag again in Dec 2009 to remove the Port.

Bone marrow biopsy and a biopsy of the tumor in my chest

Had surgery to remove the tumor from his calf on September 8, 2010. Surgery was successful with clean margins, but given the grade of his tumor, the doctors at Phoenix Children's Hospital (PCH) felt it was imperative to enroll him in the Children's Oncology Group clinical trial, which gave a specific protocol treatment.
Nov 26, 2014 an exploratory surgery was completed in an attempt to resect the 4.1 cm tumor that was encasing into my small bowel. Once inside, Dr.'s then realized the tumor was surrounded by important arteries in the mesentery area, thus the tumor could not be resected more than 20 %.
Surgery in 2008 to remove tumor and removal of my spleen and some pancreas, surgery in 2011 to remove tumor, awaiting decision by surgeon to see if surgery is an option this time Feb 2015.
Still to be determined.
On December 30 1999 the surgeon took out a large tumor from Nicole's left forearm and after a biopsy diagnosed her with Rhabdomayosarcoma, a rare, juvenile cancer that strikes one in a million children, mostly boys under 10.
I had my surgery February 7, 2011 and I didn't have any side effects from it. They tried to take the tumor out laparoscopically but the size of the tumor didn't allow for that and they have to give me a bikini cut

Parotid Cancer Surgeries

Laryngectomy; total removal of voice box February 25, 2016 7 hour surgery Second tumor removal/ Salvage Laryngectomy done July 25, 2016
I had to have an Embolisation first, which unfortunately took alot longer than what they thought, as the tumor was so big and had a major blood supply going to it. My operation was held on my 30th birthday, so unfortunately it will be a birthday I will always remember for the wrong reasons. My operation took 12 hours, and I was kept asleep for a further 12. When I woke up, I was told that they had to leave part of the tumor in due to side effects it may cause if taken out. I was and still am unable to swallow so at first I had a feeding tube running down through my nose, then after a week I had a peg fitted. I have been told that there is a possibility I may never swallow again, and I am finding this so hard to come to terms with.
Removed all teeth because of location of cancer any infection of a tooth for the rest of his life would not heal & cause loss of jaw bone.
