I am a work from home mom to four teens and wife for 24 years to an Air Force officer. We have lived all over the world but have happily settled here in Virginia where my husband was stationed at The Pentagon, and recently retired, now working as a civilian government employee there. I design jewelry and have two online boutiques. I was diagnosed with breast cancer one year ago, October 1, 2008. I finished chemo therapy with Herceptin in Decemeber 2009, but finished my most dibilitating chemo in May, 2009. I love my life of kayaking, exercising, …

I am a nurse. You would think I knew better. I think I was scared and in quite a bit of denial. I have been a nurse for a long time and have worked in critical care and lets just say..knew enough to be dangerous to myself. A lymph node became inflammed on my neck and I recognized it when I could see it in the mirror. There it was. I am good at taking care of others, but, not myself. I also have the philosophy that if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it and a general mistrust for medicine and …

My name is Julia Ruane-Smith, I am in my 50’s (don’t feel like updating the age every year – am I lazy or what/), I have a wacky sense of humor, I am a starving artist that isn’t exactly starving thanks to having a wonderful husband! I have two grown boys from my first marriage, 3 cats (1 is mute and drools when my husband rubs his head, 1 thinks he is a dog and a computer geek, and the female is on anti-anxiety meds), one dog of our own and we take in foster dogs for k9newlifecenter of which …

Martha's Cancer Survivor Profile

I am a 55-year old female diagnosed with Stage I/II squamous cell cancer of the anal canal in June 2008. I began noticing symptoms (bleeding) in May 2008, but now that I know so much more about this cancer, I realize I had some symptoms prior to that, such as pressure in the rectum and changes in bowel habits. I began treatment on July 28th., chemotherapy with mitomycin and fluorouracil, and radiation X 30 treatments. My radiation was completed on Sept. 9th. My last PET/CT scan showed definite improvement and my last appointment with my colorectal …

I am not a cancer survivor, but my 18 year old daughter is 6 months out from treatment for papillary thyroid cancer. Treatment was amazingly easy for her. She did not skip a beat – participating in all her High School senior activites, and summer Musical Theater shows. She is now in college in Philadelphia. Her attitude is incredible. Mine..not so much, but it is not about me. It is very stressful time and I am trying to learn as much as I can, from the medical community and other fellow travelers on this journey.

Kelly's Cancer Survivor Profile

I am currently taking care of my beloved Dad, who was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer on January 29, 2010. I refuse to give up, and for that, he has said that I have become his reason for fighting this cancer.
