  • 1st one today 26-April-2010 so far so good but I know whats coming. A tad of anxiety at fist bolt down of goalie mask to table to treatment ....not sure why but got a scrip for a happy pill seeing as how I will have this 5 days a week for 6-7 weeks. Radiation was tough lost ability to swallow. had to learn to swallow from scratch not fun was on the tube for feeding for about two months post treatment, pain pills a little tough to kick weird dreams and stuff remember to take your stool softeners when you take your pain meds..........just one thing you don't need to add to your list of things to worry about if you know what I mean. 18 Months out now can eat alot of things now mouth still doesnt open like it did no big burgers or sandwhiches stilll keeping off the 60 pounds I wanted to lose of the 80 i took off 20 put back on for kicks lost too much. Taste is still screwed sweet still gone chocolate well forget that, acidy stuff, tomatoes, spicy stuff, just gone so Ive learned to eat a new way swallowing is still an adventure throat is much narrower for food and even pills, so have to be careful about everything still. But hey Im still here so the rest is worth it. Its not easy its not fun but its life after cancer every day is better than the day before and not as good as the next day so keep going after all your still around and thats why we fight to begin with. Any questions at all drop me a line - Mike Rada

  • I have one more week of radition and i am done with my 6 weeks of treatment. The external radition treatments were a piece of cake. It took about 10 min 5 days a week. They dont' hurt and i never really had any side effcts until this week. A little burning and itching in the private areas but tolerable. The bad part was th internal radiation. I don't want to scare anyone but they do hurt somewhat. We are not talking the worst pain of your life but def uncomfortable. The first day is the worst and it gets better from there. The first day for me meant a cathedar in place, then something in the rectum, then the vaginal cylinder in place. I stayed like that for about an hour while they did the treatment planning. Then they did the treatment which lasted only 6 minutes. I did cry through it because having every hole plugged up is just not a natural thing girls! The second one went better. They only put the vaginal cylinder in and take a few xrays and then the 6 min treatment. Still unconfotable but muc easier. I have 2 more to go. They do offer you sediatives and mild pain pills, but i handled it without that stuff. But it is there if you request it. - Deborah

  • I started radiation therapy in late February 2010 and finished my six weeks of treatment in the beginning of April 2010. It made me incredibly weak and tired. I was also having a LOT of seizures during this time and they made the lethargy worse. My hair fell out where the radiation was focused. I could have sported an awesome mohawk but with my hair down or covered by a scarf people claimed they didn't notice. Two years later I'm still missing hair on the left side of my head. No ponytails for me but I'm getting laser hair growth treatments for free from my hairdresser. I also lost part of my left eyebrow but people say they don't notice it. (I think people lie to make me feel better about all of it.) Parts of my head felt hot and dry. The left side of my head still feels dry and itchy sometimes. I started losing hearing in my left ear in the summer of 2011. I can still hear from it. I'm not totally deaf, but when allergies are bad or I have a cold I hear like I have my finger stuck in my ear. - Jeanna
  • I started radiation treatments on October 25, 2010. I'm not sure what all of this means but my total dose is 6,120cgy. I have 34 treatments total; so I receive 180cgy a day, monday through friday. So I should finish around December 13, 2010 depending on if I miss any days or if my oncologist wants to change my plan. My side affects aren't too bad. I already have some shortness of breath so I don't think it is from the radiation. I have really sensitive skin so It is kind of red, so the therapists gave me some cream to rub on it. They mentioned that my skin will get worse before it gets better. - Elena Gilbert

Am now experiencing vaginal bleeding for past 8 weeks, starting about 2 weeks after treatment, although its difficult to know if this is related to the I-131, or whether it is related to thyroxine levels. Am concerned over long term side effects, particularly fertility as we have not yet had a family and would like one!! - Katie

  • IMRT Radiation to both sides of my neck to encompass the lymph nodes and base of tongue. My Oncologist was careful and did not want to risk that unseen cancer may have reached the base of the tongue so he treated as if it had to reduce risk of recurrence. Started Treatments on September 19th, 2011 twice a day for 6-weeks or total of 60-treatments. My last Treatment was November 2nd, 2011. The first 2-weeks were uneventful but week 3 to the end was painful and swallowing was a chore. No Peg Tube was used and I am glad I elected not to have one. My Oncologist and ENT also felt I should try not to use one to prevent swallowing issues in recovery. I am now 14-days out of my last treatment and my throat is improving finally. - Don

  • Plaque brachytherapy - July 2003. Plaque inserted on Friday morning and removed Monday night. Long, long weekend in isolation and having to carry a geiger counter around. Eye was puffy, bloodshot for a long time, painful and vision deteriorated quite rapidly. Now have retinal detachment, pretty lousy vision in that eye and grey areas on the sclera (white of the eye) that may be burns from the cauterisation tool or where the sclera has thinned due to the radiation. Last November (2007), it was noticed that the edge of the tumour is still growing in some areas and I have therefore had to have these treated with Transpupillary Thermotherapy (laser). - Littlun1066

  • Radiation - May 26 - June 26 2008 - knocked me out almost as soon as it began because I have fibromyalgia, which worsens the effects of radiation (e.g. the fatigue one normally would feel at the end of treatment) immediately. After the first 3 days of treatment during the week, I slept for nearly 20 hours my first weekend off. But, being the stubborn, willful, determined and focused creature I am (one that refused to let cancer own me...no, no dears, I was and AM in control of this ship known as my body), I went to work part-time throughout the 4 weeks that I went through it. Determined to be myself and still live my life – not the one cancer dictated - I drove to NYC every morning (hour and a half commute) and worked until 1 p.m. so that I could leave early for my afternoon appointment. After treatment however, even though I managed to drive home I was a zombie. I couldn’t focus on anything, nor could I sleep. Most of the time I just sat and blankly stared at my computer screen, virtually unable to think clearly. I did suffer from memory loss throughout the 4 weeks of radiation I had, which I attributed to a more exaggerated version of the brain fog fibromyalgia sufferers experience. I frequently forgot what I was saying when I was conversing with friends, which was very unusual for me as I have a very detail-focused mind and pay attention to what others say. At work I nearly collapsed from exhaustion at the end of the 3rd week of radiation and was forced to take time off to get through what would be my last but most critical week of treatment. - Alive And Thriving

  • Radiation for me became a time of meditation and a time to just lay back and picture my cancer cells being burned to a crisp (along with my bladder, vagina, uterus, ovaries, and anything else in there)...sometimes I cried during treatment and sometimes I just pretended it wasn't really me...I had the best team and although I hope to never have to deal with this treatment again I know where I will go without a doubt - Wellspring Oncology in St.Petersburg Florida. I had six weeks of daily (mon-fri) treatments starting Sept 8, 2008 and ending Oct.20, 2008. I had pretty bad "burns" all over my vaginal and rectal areas, pain in my butt (haha), and my bladder was affected (frequency, burning)...I still have no confirmation of the extent of damage to my womanly organs but will in a few weeks... - Audrey Friedman
  • Radiation for pain management only, not for reduction of tumor. - Barbara
  • Radiation from end of January until March 17, 2011. I received three different radiation hits to my breast and one hit to the lymph nodes in my neck every day Monday through Friday. The radiation was fairly easy. The hardest part was having to go every single day. Once there, it took maybe 15 minutes to administer and a total time of being there about 30 minutes. Towards the end, my skin did start getting a big irritated and I started peeling a little bit. After radiation, I have discoloration still but the skin has healed. The only other side effects I did have during radiation is at some point, it became extremely difficult for me to swallow. It hurt so bad I had to spit out my own saliva as I could not swallow that. I had to take some white paste pill that dissolved in water for a few weeks in order to get food down. - April

In 2010 I am currently having issues with radiation damage that include cramping in my neck muscles, difficultly maintaining my mouth opening and some slurring of my tongue. • Radiation started July 7 Burns started the end of the following week. Burns worsened the 3 week, to the point that there were blisters all around my anus and vaginal area. Doctors were suprised at the intensity of the burns. Start of 5th week, 2nd round of chemo, but burns got so bad by the Wednesday, that on the Thursday, I had to take a 10 day break. Burns healed incredibly fast and began treatment 10 days later. One thing I noticed was that in the beginning I was being set up for the radiation differently with each different technician... when I told the doctors that in week 4, he had the previous sessions scrutinized and from that time on, there was a distinct difference AND consistency in the setup process. I don't know if in the long run it will affect the effectiveness of my treatment or not. Only time will tell. - Deborah

The soreness of the throat and lost voice persisted for around 6-8weeks. There were increased phlegm and saliva production, which mum said tasted "chemical" and would spit out quickly. On the skin, a red rash began to show, and the doctor advised to avoid sunlight, as the rash will darken. Treatment with CyberKnife also carried out on the spine. • Starting April I had 25 radiation treatments 5 days a week for 5 weeks. It burned the outer part of me to the point that my skin blackened. I could not walk or sit without hurting, even standing made me weak. Then I had a two week break before I went into the hospital for internal radiation treatments.I was to have 5 high dose treatments done all in one week where i would go in the morning for treatment and at night for another treatment. Monday I went in to have it surgically put in,had a treatment...had another treatment that next day. Then the doctor decided it could be better so he took it out and made some changes. He had me come back 2 weeks later and finished up the last 3 treatments by putting me back in the hospital and surgically implanting the radiation device again. My doctor was very particular about how he did everything and he took such good care of me. - Susan

  • Well, radiation, wasn't to bad & yes if made me sick to my stomach sometimes. But I think the worst for me was the burn it left on my breast, that hurt the most. I was given cream to help the burn & it pretty much took care of it. I was lucky in that area, I only had to take 7 wks. of radiation & my mom & I had to drive 75 miles every day for it. I think that was the worst, casue with a sick stomach, the ride was not so good. - Denise Carter
  • When first I went for radiation it was as I was just bloating with fluid from chemo side effects so had to wait and when I went to re-do markers they said markers were now in place so I was able to continue so that was oct/02 or thereabouts... Actually I improved while taking rad as I was so sick to start and on oxygen 24/7 I had some burns at the site and was tired as I had been in advance. - Sylvia
