  • I guess it all began on my 5th birthday. After months of bruising, nosebleeds, ear infections, chest colds, obnoxiously high fevers, and muscle pains so severe that I was unable to walk, I was diagnosed with ALL (acute lymphocytic leukemia). I went into remission a few months after treatment, and after a 3-year protocol I was pronounced a "full cure" at age 8. For 10 years I experienced absolutely no further symptoms, and just lived an extraordinarily normal & boring life without giving that stupid disease another thought. Then, I broke my arm. No big deal, right? Well, at my 10th annual follow-up checkup, I was told that - suprise! - I had localized osteosarcoma in my left radius (lower arm bone), and was in the early stages of AML (acute myelogenous leukemia). I underwent 1 year of chemo & radiation, as well as surgical removal of the osteogenic sarcoma & a bone graft (limb-salvage a complete success: my arm is still intact!). After going in and out of remission, I had a bone marrow transplant. 1 year later, I was pronounced in "full" remission, and discontinued all treatments the subsequent year. I had no further symptoms. 8 months ago I learned that my AML was no longer in remission. Here we go again :)

  • Mike's lymph nodes in his neck were swollen and doctors thought at first it was something else. But, after a couple of months, Mike knew something wasn't right. So, a surgeon removed one of the lymph nodes and came out of surgery and told me he was 99% sure Mike had some type of cancer. Later, it was discovered that he had cancerous lymph nodes not only in his neck but 2 other places on his body. The doctors at Vanderderbilt then determined it was AML.

LOl or the time my friend called me and i asked him to hold a sec. i blew my nose forgot he was on the phone and fell asleep. 20 min later i woke up and saw he was still on the phone. lol i finaly saw a dr and they told me i had strep throat. after taking anti biotics for 10 days and no change i went to the ER. i was dangerously dehydrated, anemic, and had huge lumps on my shins that was tender like a bruise and very feverish. Ill always remember that day cuz i went into that ER and never came back out. it felt like forever waiting on different test results. when the doctor finaly came in and told us i didnt really understand. in fact i didnt even know that leukemia was a cancer. treatments started so fast it all blacked out and i dont really remember any of it. but there was my symptoms.

  • Have experienced bright red blood from time to time with no other symptoms. After talking to doctor, I dismissed this as nothing to worry about. About one year ago I discovered a small bump inside my anus. Doctor thought it was a hemorrhoid and prescribed suppositories and fiber supplement. At this point I had experienced no pain, just occasional bright red blood. As time went on, the bump became larger and harder. Then, I experienced itching and soreness after bowel movements. Thanks to "Dr. google", I decided that my hemorrhoid had thrombosed (clotted). I returned to my doctor, endured a painful exam and she referred me to a surgeon (still thinking it was a hemorrhoid and that I probably needed hemorrhoidectomy). Upon examination, the surgeon told me it felt a little harder than a hemorrhoid should be and he wanted to biopsy it while I was under anesthesia. The biopsy showed "invasive non-keratinizing sqamous cell carcinoma, moderate to poorly differentiated. No lymphovascular invasion identifed.
  • hemorrhoids, bleeding with bowel movements.
  • Hemorrhoids- went to OB/GYN in Feb complaining of hemorrhoids. Then again in April with pressure she said hemorrhoids. Knew something was wrong so self scheduled with colo rectal doctor.

  • I did'nt have much symptoms exact I was itching back there and I felt this slump that seemed to be getting bigger I thought it was a hemmroid since I had dealt with them as a child but after the biopsy I was shocked when they said it was cancer from that point all I could hear was cancer nothing else registered at all I was simply numb.
  • I had been experiencing problems for months and the doctor I was going to just basically blew me off. I told the doctor I was bleeding profusely, I was having pain, and I it felt like there was a mass in my ass! He performed a colonoscopy and he said everthing looked fine but I did have some non-bleeding internal hemorrhoids. I was not happy with the findings because I was bleeding and the pain was getting worse. He then had me swallow a camera and came to the same conclusion that I was fine. I called back and told them everything was not fine. The bleeding was getting worse and the pain was also increasing. They finally sent me to a colon rectal surgeon, who after five minutes of meeting me, did a digital exam and told me he was pretty sure I had anal cancer!
  • I had cin111 when I was 54 Had a hysterectomy. Since Feb 07 blood in stool & hpv came back in cuff @ then got checked for any anal disease
  • I had rectal bleeding for 2 months and was told by a doctor it was hemmorhoids but that if it didn't stop in a month, to get a colonoscopy. She was a great doctor. Saved me because there is no spreading to any lymph nodes
  • I had what I thought was a hemorrhoid, anal itching, bleeding and changes in my bowels movements.
  • I thought I had hemorrhoids, internal and external. Had pain and bleeding. Went to my GP back in Feb for a pap and asked her to take a look- She said that it looked sore and gave me a surgeons name and she did not indicate that she thought it could be something more serious. As I did not want to have hemorrhoid surgery, I put off seeing the surgeon until Nov as I could no longer stand the pain. As soon as he took a look he knew it was cancer.
  • I thought I had the worst hemorrhoid in America--popping out like a Jack-in-the-box, along with some bleeding.
  • In October of 2008, I started having fatigue symptoms and my legs were aching all the time, just to the outside of my shins. I felt full and had a lot of flatuence. My GP did bloodtests and discovered I was very low in the B6 vitamin. When questioned, he said that it was not a symptom (to his knowledge) of anything, although I did read it could have relavancy to cancer diagnosis later. I told him after taking supplements, that I still was not well and asked for a colonoscopy because I had had previous ones and they had removed polyps and told me I should have them once every 3 years, but then when I saw another doctor, she told me not to come back for 5 years, which would have been in 2009. He refused to let me have one. In March I saw the doctor again about irritation in my anal area and he said it was hemorroids. In April 2009, I did my own DRE and felt the lump was quite a bit bigger, then remembered what had happened the previous July. I went to the doctor, my own GP wasn't there, but I saw his colleague who told me it was most likely hemorroids and I insisted he set me up for a colonoscopy. When I called back a week later, they said they had not heard back from the specialist. I called the specialist's office who told me that they had not received the request. Fearful of the competancy of my GP's office, I went to a Walk In Clinic in a nearby town. The doctor was an older man, retired but volunteering his time at the clinic, he did a DRE, clearly told me I had a tumor and had me in to see a doctor in less than three days.... oh the difference between older humbled doctors and arrogant younger doctors who treat you like you are a hypocondriac! In the long run, I take responsibility for having not acted sooner on my own instincts, and I also feel the doctor who 'was' my GP at the time, needs to take responsibility for being so intent on keeping my records up to date and typing into the computer, that he didn't even listen to my symptoms... I recently was in the emerg for another reason and overheard a patient that was registering for care say "I do not want Dr "so and so", if I have to have him, I will leave and go to another hospital." Sometimes we are put in a place for a reason, if only to validate our experience with another. Oh, I had Mitomycin and 5FU - just wondering why that is not listed under Chemotherapy?
  • Intermittent rectal bleeding during bowel movement; No pain. The anal cancer had been misdiagnosed as an internal hemorroid during a routine colonoscopy 4 years prior to the current cancer diagnosis.
  • Itchy growth near anus and large condylomas
  • Janury 3, 2005 - discovered an anal fissure while on vacation; went to clinic and was advised to put PrepH on it and check back with my doctor if it did not help. Fissure would not heal since that time and finally a biopsy was performed in 2009.

  • Dull ache in center of breast which radiated out around the shoulder and back area. For over 6 years docs said not to worry, as mammograms were all normal and AOK. I switched docs, had another normal mammogram, but he ordered an ultrasound for me, which showed suspicious results...which turned out to be Stage 3A Invasive Lobular cancer....just one week after a normal mammogram!
  • Found by Mammogram. Left Breast this time.
  • 1st time- I felt a small lump when I laid down to go to sleep- 2nd time- fluid built up in my chest, lund had collapsed- couldn't breath. It go progressively worse over about 2-3 weeks. Felt a heaviness on my chest when I bent over, and struggled to climb stairs.
  • ? Eights years with fatigue.
  • A full feeling in my left breast; found a lump; felt like there was something under my arm, like I was carrying a newspaper.
  • A large mass in right breast found during self-exam. Swelling, itching, and pain in breast. The mass continued to grow, and right breast become enlarged to almost double the size in two-month period. CT Scan later found out that the mass was about 5cm x 4cm x 2cm. I was finally diagnosed with Inflammatory Breast Cancer.
  • A large mass in right breast found during self-exam. Swelling, itching, and pain in breast
  • A large mass up under my right arm
  • A lump that was there one day and gone the next.
  • Absolutely no medical symptoms. I was not sick or tired, I had no physical discomfort. But I did feel a small lump -left breast, but it would disappear a week after my period. So I thought nothing of it.
  • ACHES IN MUSCLES AND JOINTS, MOUTH & GUM SORES, DRY SKIN, HAIR LOSS
  • Aching and hardening in my breast. I can see the tumor growing and pushing my breast aside.

  • Cancer cells grew (for 2 years) under a mass (lump) we've been "watching" for a decade. No matter how cancer is found it will piss you off, make you feel neglectful and resentful of the medical community. Cancer happens - let it go and live large for the rest of your life.
  • Cancer did Not Show up on Mammagram for five years. I found the mass in September after using my arms a lot to pick up my AVA BABY Granddaughter. Thought I had a new muscle. Went to the Dr. anyway. It was Cancer.
  • Constant pain in my chest. Lumps make tightening in my chest. EXTREME neuropathy. We all know about hair and what chemo does.
  • Did not really have any. Just some lumps in the opposite breast from where the cancer started. Right side was the one that was affected the most.

  • Felt painful lump in left breast while showering.

  • Had intraductal papillomas removed from right breast...suffering from 2 more surgeries due to staph infection in less than 2 weeks of the first surgery. I feel due to this surgery & the staph that this breast was weakened. Three years later I notice a terrible hard lump on the incision site. Nothing else until CT scan was done. Nothing felt during breast exam by my OB/GYN or myself other than the hard lump. Nothing showed up on mammo or magnified mammo. Tumors visible on ultrasound. Left breast was full of them & the largest one was growing straight back from the nipple area towards the back of my body (doctor stated it was "in hiding.")
  • had some aches and pains in lower back.
  • haven't been diagnosed. but worried about symptoms. lump in right breast with partial nipple inversion and needle prick sensations
  • hives trouble breathing coughing
  • I actually didn't have any symptoms other than slight tenderness in my breast, which was identical to the kind I got days before my period. I did have a cyst on my breast (a clogged milk duct), but I had it for decades and pretty much didn't pay attention to it until it started to bother me during the fall of 2007. It was getting bigger, periodically caused sharp (but slight) twinges of pain, and seemed to be coming to a head. Trying to open it by myself was tough, as it was very clogged. One night however, and somewhat ironically, my husband must have intuited something was wrong when he ran upstairs to our bedroom (I was in bed) and insisted that he drain it. I thought he was out of his mind and didn't want him to do it, but he insisted that he should for reasons I didn’t know at the time. When he broke it, copious amounts of this foul and fetid fluid drained out of the duct and the cyst disappeared. Months later, after my diagnosis and lumpectomy, the surgeon told us that my husband may have saved my life, as the cancer would have spread if the clogged duct grew larger and wasn’t drained.
  • I am very very lucky - I am basically asymptomatic even as bad as my cancer is. The chemo is where I get my side effects and I really cannot complain much about that - yet.

  • I had no symptoms of cancer. I went in for a complete physical and she sent me for a mammogram
  • I had no symptoms, just a small little lump on my right breast.
  • I had NO symptoms. Breast cancer runs in my family (Mom's side) and so I had been getting mammograms since my 20's. The tumor was little and could not be felt by me, nor seen on an ultrasound. I probably would not be here had I not gotten a mammogram.
  • I had none
  • I had none other than a hard lump. I always get lumps. This one was harder than usual.
  • I had none, no one even felt a lump! Just went to my yearly exam and was asked to do a baseline mammogram and BAM!......Here we are!

  • I really had no symptoms that I noticed. I accidentally found the first lump in 1994 myself. The second one in 2005 was detected during my annual mammogram. I would never have found this one because it was in the center of the breast at the back wall.
  • I was one of the few with pain before my diagnoses. Pain in my breast would take my breath away.
  • I was rather quite fortunate; I did not experience any true symptoms.
  • In 2007 I had a persistent cough (thought it was allergies); Felt tired (thought it was from working shifts) & some back pain (thought it was old age)and it turned out to be pleural effusion. First time, I discovered a lump in my breast in 2000.
  • In September of this year, I felt a large lump in my left breast. I had an appt for my mammogram...it was postponed a week so that I could get a prescription for a Diagnostic and Screening with ultrasound. The mammogram did not show the lump, however, the ultrasound did. I was scheduled for a core biopsy 3 days later, and 2 days after that I had my diagnosis.

Wondering now if it was my lymphatic system trying to fight off the tumor cells all those months.
  • Lump found at annual physical, mammogram negative (did not show up on mammo), ultrasound was considered benign (just watch). I saw a surgeon who again assumed 90% chance this is benign, but we can biopsy. My instincts and medical background were telling me to get a biopsy, so the next day after biopsy - I got the call that it was cancer.
  • Lump I could feel and nipple retraction. Had mammo and ultrasound and the doc said "a fluid filled cyst, nothing to worry about" Thank God I worried, because he couldn't have been more wrong... The ultrasound missed a 3.2 x 3.7 cm tumor- YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING!

The pathology and the mastectomy showed at 1.5-mm, invasive, component, grade 3. Invasive carsinoma in the setting of DCIS. ER/PR+ at 90 and 90% respectively. HER-2/neu is 3+ I am BRCA1 and BRCA2 negative for this mutation. Removed 5 lymph nodes, they were all negative.

  • I first noticed a lump on the left side of my neck and pursued it, finally having a different lymph node removed and classified as cancerous.
  • I found a lump in my groin when I was 19 years old. It was diagnosed as a hernia. 8 months later I had surgery and the surgeon said "that's not a hernia."
  • I found lumps in the left side of my neck. The lumps got bigger and I found more. I had some night sweats and fatigue.
  • I had absolutely no symptoms. Mine was found through a kidney stone.
  • I was tired all the time, but blamed it on being the mother of three small children and working 2nd shift. I stopped playing with my kids outside or even going outside with them. I'd let them play while I dozed in and out. I also had asthma-like symptoms for over a year and was actually diagnosed with asthma...or should I say "misdiagnosed" with asthma. I had shortness of breath, wheezing, and coughing jags. I had pains in my neck, which I thought were kinks and suddenly one day when I started rubbing my neck on January 21, 2009 it felt like a huge bulge. That whole day I had a horrible feeling after that and finally called to make an appointment with my doctor.

  • Most notably, I was itching horribly, and I lost 25+ lbs. Also, I wasn't sleeping and had vivid nightmares and night sweats when I did. I had a lumpy neck, fatigue, a cough that lasted for months, and finally, my left lung had collapsed (which lead to the diagnosis).
  • My cancer presented atypically. My very first symptom was not enlarged lymph nodes or fevers or itching, but severe bone pain in my lower back that radiated down into my left leg. This persisted for several weeks before I began experiencing fevers and night sweats. Sed rate was elevated but not extraordinarily. Doctors were baffled. First they thought it was lupus and then RA and then they told me it was all in my head - growing pains or some other lame-ass diagnosis. The symptoms continued and steadily worsened over the next several months before somebody finally had the sense enough to do an MRI and bone scan. These revealed a lesion near the L-4 vertebrate. A biopsy was performed and although the lesion did not have the characteristic features of lumbar osteomyelitis, that was the pathological diagnosis and what I was treated for. I underwent placement of PICC line in order to receive antibiotics for osteomyelitis. A chest x-ray was performed afterward to confirm correct placement of PICC line. It was at this time the radiologist detected lesions on the x-ray. I was referred to the Mayo Clinic. A CAT scan with IV contrast showed extensive mediastinal enlargement, mediastinal and hilar adenopathy, and lesions in the pulmonary parenchyma. The lumbar portion of the CAT scan reveled lymphatic involvement in the spinal region that was previously biopsied. A mediastinoscopy was performed but all tissue that was removed was identified as normal thymus. The surgeon then performed a thoracotomy and biopsied a large perihilar lymph node. The final pathology report showed nodular sclerosing Hodgkin's disease in the the lung and hilar lymph node, making it a stage 4B lesion. It took six months from the onset of symptoms until a definitive diagnosis could be made. My case was so atypical. There was never any palpable lymph nodes until the very end. In fact, the diagnosis was made almost by accident---by a random chest x-ray to determine proper placement of PICC line. I underwent six cycles of ABVD/MOPP and radiation to chest and spine. NED as of April 1992. July 1992 I began to experience night sweats and fevers. Sed rate was elevated but no palpable lymph nodes. CAT scan of chest in August 1992 revealed changes in the mediastinum which was suspicious of recurrence. Underwent biopsy at Mayo Clinic 8/92 but surgeon could find no evidence of disease. Symptomas continued unabated. Lesions evident on liver, but liver biopsy returned normal. A second thoracotomy a week later revealed Hodgkin's. Stage 4B with involvement in liver, spleen and anterior mediastinum. Returned home and received 3 cycles of DECAL salvage therapy followed by autologous stem cell transplant. NED as of 4/1993.

    Hodgkins Lymphoma Symptoms:

What Cancer Survivors said about their cancer symptoms.

  • With the Hodgkin’s I had a pain in my chest that I tried to ignore. When a guttural cough started, it was thought to be a bronchial problem. Four month later, I started feeling like I was literally drowning and could not get my breath, especially while lying down. I knew there was a deeper problem - but did not want to admit it. Before being diagnosed with the blood cancer I was feeling very dizzy and weak – I had such pain in my bones and knew something was wrong. This went on for months, but my doctor said I was just depressed … even with my history. It took a stroke for him to look deeper. The only way I can describe how I feel at times I feel as if my spine was drying out – or that I need a good oiling! When they did a spinal tap there was very little fluid. I think we need to listen to what our bodies are telling us and hopefully the doctors will too.

The oncologist found two spots on my lung, and the cancer had spread to two lymph nodes on the other side of my chest wall. We went back to the doctor only to be told he had an acute sinus infection. In february Ron underwent surgery for a deviated septum and lo and behold they found a massive tumor was the real cause of all the nosebleeds, headaches and general unwellness.

  • As they say, ovarian cancer "whispers" and in my mom's case it was true to form. She started eating slightly less, started having slight/occasional heart burn, and was ever so slightly less energetic. Unfortunately, none of us noticed these things until after she was diagnosed. Here are the symptoms/events that led to her diagnosis: The week before my mom went to the doctor she mentioned a few times that her stomach wasn't feeling good and that she wasn't eating too much. That Sunday she felt overly full after having only toast and coffee for breakfast, she continued to feel "bloated" all day and was unable to eat. The next morning her pants were tight around her belly and she was still unable to eat. My sister (who is a nurse) told her to get to the Dr ASAP. Her GP couldn't fit her in until Thursday (3 days later) but my sister told her not to wait and to go to the walk in clinic and request a CT scan. She went and the walk in clinic doc set her up for a CT scan the following day. The next day my moms belly was even bigger than before and she had to stop several times in the parking lot b/c she said she "felt like she was going to pass out" the results were set to her GP who called her in on Wednesday to give her the results. My sister knew then that something was wrong since she suddenly was able to see her on Wednesday. By Thursday she was in to see the doctor who would later become her oncologist.

I am thankful for the mini-stroke or I would not have known I had cancer. Looking back I did have symptoms of weight gain, dry skin, brittle nails, and feeling tired. I thought it was because I was older. LOL

Dr. expected brain involvement, ordered MRI. No indications of disease. Prescribed gabapentin, was like a miracle. I think because I could sleep. Symptoms abated for some time then returned. I went back to my PCP who had been on this the whole time. He sent me to a neurologist (who was awful) that ran a bunch of torture tests. He then sent me for an MRI of my neck. This is perhaps the best part of the story. When I met with him about the results he coldly said this is not neurological. Nothing else! I had an appointment with my PCP about two weeks later. Upon reading the report he said you have a large nodule on your thyroid (WTF). What a crappy doctor that neurologist was! Didn't say a thing or send a report to my PCP... My PCP went into high gear and ordered an Ultrasound, followed by a biopsy. Bad Findings, consult, and surgery. Great Surgeon, Dr. Glackin. Kind, Listens, Patient, Tender. Both Dr's PCP Levin and Surgeon Dr. Glackin visited and made sure orders were followed and I was comfortable after surgery and the next day. I thought that only happened on TV.
