Cancer Surgery, Description and Side Effects - What Cancer Survivors said about their surgeries.
Bilateral Salpingo-Oophorectomy- Cancer debulking with all the works...

Port-a-cath insertion: 4/06, Periodic pain although it is more annoying than painful most of the time.
Oopherectomy: 5/06, The burning was the most painful part of this surgery. It went away fairly quickly though.
Hip nail procedure: 9/06, Learning to walk again and learning to walk up and down stairs again was painful, but better than having a full hip replacement if I broke the hip. This was a profelactic measure as there were lesions on the base of the hip ball.
Kyphoplasty: 2/07, Really improved the pain in my back which wasn't helped by radiation treatment.
- Mastectomy in Aug.'08 because dcis was in 2 places. Lumpectomy not an option and besides, I didn't have to have chemo or any other after treatment. Endometrial cancer caused complete hysterectomy in August '09. I am just now finished with 6 months of chemo and 28 radiation treatments. Both were hell. - Open distal pancreatectomy and splenectomy is the type of surgery I had for my pancreatic cancer in January of 07..side effects..digestion issues....especially for the spicier foods that I love and anything gassy...peppers,cucumbers, onions, broccoli, and cabbage..must stay at a minimum and I hate this if I were to put any combo of 2 or more of these things in a salad I would be extremely ill. when I first came home from the hospital finishing a tv dinner was often more than I could handle. - The surgeon, an excellent surgeon, recommended a lobectomy on the right lung. Surgery was performed on July 13, 2009. The surgeon found the nodule was cancerous and had grown in an area of the lung damaged by a fungal infection, cryptocaucus. My recuperation period in the hospital was twelve days, the release prolonged due to a pneumothorax (collapsed lung). The treatment for this was the most painful thing I have EVER encountered. It's called Pleurodesis and consists of putting one of any number of chemicals (sclerosing agents or sclerosants) into the pleural space by way of the existing chest tube. The sclerosant irritates the pleurae which results in inflammation (pleuritis) and causes the pleurae to stick together. I don't recommend this to cure boredom but it did work!!

Mastectomy- Has any one heard of the port being placed on the arm??
Skin/nipple spearing, bilateral Mastectomy with immediate reconstruction; the right Brest where the lump was found healed perfectly. The left side which was cancer free did not heal. The permanent implant was replaced with an expander implant and it did not heal either. The repeated reversal of the reconstruction was taking a toll on my moral and was also delaying the treatment. We decided to leave the left breast area to heal so quimo can begin. Once completed, the reconstruction will be attempted once again. Originally, it was thought that I did not need a port because the lymph nodes were clean. However, I do have to have one implanted and will done on Wed.
- 2006, December no side effects that are permanent
- Had a modified radical mastectomy followed by a prophylactic mastectomy with expander. I will be having an additional reconstructive surgery on October 8th.
- Left mastectomy and sentinal node biopsy, August 8, 07. Muscular and nerve pain, depression, headaches, lymphedema, sleep loss, major loss of confidence.
- Mastectomy, January 28, 2008
- Mastectomy upcoming this week
- I had a biospy first & it turned out positive of cancer. I then had another surgery, to check the lymph nodes, thank God, they were neg., after that one I got staff infection & boy it was worst pain than the surgery itself. I was on 1000 mg of infection for almost 2 wks. Well, after I found out I had cancer, I was in shock for around a mon. or so, so were my parents, we could not look at each other without crying. It felt like I had been given a death sentence. You know, when you hear the big "C" word, everyone thinks, the big "D" word & I'm here to tell you, it's not always true. Then one day I was talking to a friend & she told me, Denise, you have to take hold of this thing & show it your not a quiter. That your gonna fight this with all you got, cause if you don't, it'll take you over & it will win. Well, needless to say, something just clicked & I woke up & from then on I fought this thing & 3 years later, here I am.
- Masectomy 05/20/2008
- Actually my surgery went really well. I didn't have much pain and went home the next day. Some lymphadema.

- Double mastectomy December 2000
Not able to have reconstruction, not a good candidate I am told, not enough skin left.
- I had a modified radical mastectomy on May 24, 1990. I didn't have any side effects. No pain pills needed at all.
- Left Mastecomy 9/25/07.
Recovering really wasn't that bad.
The node procedure was worse with recovery.
- May 2008 lump noted by self on right breast...mammogram ordered, ultrasound, biopsy...and finally double mastecomy July 8 2008 with 24 lymph nodes removed
- from 6/06 to 8/06 I had 3 surgerys one to remove the cancers for bio. the another to remove tissue and limpnodes and one to put a port in for chemo
- 2000 - Mastectomy
- November 5, 2009, bilateral mastectomy and sentinal node biopsy.
The most painful (and I'm not joking at all) of this process other than standing up in the middle of the night to walk..was the dye injection for the sentinal node biopsy. Its inhuman to put anyone through this procedure while they are still lucid.
- Radical Mastectomy in Dec 2000 - couldn't have reconstructive surgery because too many lymph nodes were malignant & had to start immediate aggressive chemotherapy
Complete Hysterectomy in Aug 2001 - growths were benign!!
Wound Debredment Surgery in July 09 for non-healing wound caused from removing infected medical port. To get this completely healed took more than six months of treatments at the Wound Care Center. It was very painful and worse than chemo side effects.
- After surgery was set for mastectomy of left breast, MRI revealed small mass in right breast. Double mastectomy was done 3-09. Final biopsy revealed 2 masses in right breast and 2.9cm in left.
- bilateral mastectomy, SNB, expander reconstruction.
- Double mastectomy with no reconstruction on August 11, 2009. My surgeon was awesome and surgery was a breeze.
- Had bi-lateral mastectomy. Pretty tough surgery. Had 4 drainage tubes for a week. Most uncomfortable other than surgery site: Had to sleep on my back at a 45 degree angle and I always slept on one of my sides. This lasted about 3 weeks.
- Left mastectomy - January 19, 2005
- I had a total radical mastectomy with 3 lymph and reconstruction with saline and expander that didn,t take and was removed, body rejected it and it hardned, now use prothesis, surgery was December 17, 1993.
- 12/12

Reconstructive surgery immediately following
(TRAM flap)
- January 5th 2009 is the date for the new ta ta's!
- 2/6/03 ~ wake up not initially that fun, adjusting to meds, draining weird to me, scary.......but, determined to use my left arm!
- I opted to have both my breasts removed and my ovaries. Reconstructed. Doing OK with that right now. But still not the same. At least I'm alive for kids.
- December 2, 2003, bi-lateral mastectomy. Lymphedema.
- they put the blue dye in my live diseased breast on 04-26-04, then as they put me to sleep they acccidently gave me a shot of adrenalyn (sp) so I had to redo the blue dye on 04-28-04 on my 18th anniversary after they had checked to make sure there was no cardiac danger.
- lumpectomy/lymph node removal April 2nd 2007
Mastectomy 18th April 2007
Numbness under arm and across chest.
Pain in my ribs.
- Bilateral Mastectomy March 30, 2010 with left breast being prophylactic with immediate reconstruction. After 6 weeks of recovering from the mastectomy, I seen my oncologist and he decided since I was node negative to put me on tamoxifen due to the tumor size being so small plus my receptors were positive which is an aggresive form of cancer. I have been taking tamoxifen for 6 weeks now and feel pretty good, except for constipation and now take two laxative pills daily to help with this and just recently got hives. I am on steroids to get rid of those.
- 1989 had a masectomy. It was in all my ducts of my breast. But I caught in early enough that it did not affect my lymph nodes so I did not need any radiation or chemotherapy. In 2000 I had a bilateral Tram flap reconstructive procedure
- In the long run? Probably worse than any of the rest of the ordeal. I HATED losing a breast. Especially the nipple. No reconstruction can restore that, regardless of what plastic surgeons can do to create a fake one. Oh, and it was performed on my 44th birthday in Dec. 2003, which didn't help matters any.
- 3 biopsies, double mastectomey, node disecction
- January 1994 - Stage 2 - Lump was 2.4 cm. - A second 0.3 cm lump found in breast after surgery. Left modified radical mastectomy with removal of 9 lymph nodes...1 (3cm) lymph node positive. ER/PR both positive.
November 2005 - Stage 1 - Lump was 1.6 cm. Right modified radical mastectomy with lymphatic mapping and sentinel lymph node biopsy. 2 lymph nodes removed...both clear of cancer. ER negative(1%) and PR positive(7%).
- DIEP flap.
- Excision 11/2, then re-excision 11/15, then bilateral mastectomy 12/15 when they couldn't get everything. Also had port placement in my left subclavian.
- March 26,2009
- March 5 /02 was scheduled for a lumpectomy which was not successful waited till March 8th to be told I had cancer and that was on the telephone.
March 11/02 I had a mastectomy.

- Surgery after 4 months of Chemo. Mastectomy on 1-22-2009, followed by 4 more months of Chemo (oral chemo this time around - Xeloda 150mg 16 pills a day) and 40 weeks of Herceptin & 5 weeks of Radiation.
- Bilateral mastectomy and expander implant in 2/10
- Mastectomy and lymph node removal Oct 08
- Mastectomy and reconstruction for left side. Breast lift for right. I had the latissimus dorsi flap reconstruction. I had an expander put in because I was going to have radiation. This surgery was October of 2004.Later, I had the implant put in. That was January of 2006. I think having the muscle in my back redirected to make a pouch for my implant was more painful than the mastectomy.
- Modified Radical Mastectomy with lymph nodes removal in Feb 2009 after 6 months of Chemotherapy. Breast reconstruction planned in 1-2 years.
- Mastectomy on right 8/05
gamma knife on right brain tumor 11/07

- Bi-lateral mastectomy scheduled for March 9, 2009
- Mastectomy in Aug.'08 because dcis was in 2 places. Lumpectomy not an option and besides, I didn't have to have chemo or any other after treatment. Endometrial cancer caused complete hysterectomy in August '09. I am just now finished with 6 months of chemo and 28 radiation treatments. Both were hell. Chemo put me in the hospital the first two treatments. Dehydration, near kidney failure, hallucinations, dysentery, metal mouth made me not want to eat or drink. If I can say it again : Hydrate all day every day!

What a nightmare! Having drains removed was a special event for me! What a strange sensation that was to put it mildly!
- Bi-Lateral Mastectomy with Sentinel Node Biopsy. Followed by Axillary Node Dissection.
- Bilateral Mastectomy (1/11/2010) but I can't exactly remember much because the pain meds were excellent! :-) But about 4 weeks after, was really sore.

- February 10, 2010 - Surgery went extremely well...removed all visible signs of cancer from diaphragm, liver, colon, as well as omentum and complete hysterectomy. Appendix came out as well (seems to be the protocol). My mother became very depressed and was given anti-depressants.
- 12/8/2008- Complete Hysterectomy (only able to remove 80% of cancer, mainly because 2 large-ish tumors were on my mom's stomach lining and removal would have allegedly caused too much damage)

The major side effect is: I now have major headaches. I am in pain every single day! It is never ending. At night time, it is even worse.

- August 2004 tumor removed from pancreas and took part of pancreas with it and removed the spleen. My father was told that he would not have to have chemo and that he would live a normal life that they got all the cancer and that was it. We should have made him get a second opinion you see the cancer that he was diagnosed with is very rare about 1 in 25 million people. the doctors didn't know enough about it. well two years later he started having the same symtoms as before very low blood sugars (he is not diabetic) so when he went back to the doctors they discovered that he had several very large tumors on and in his liver. We took him to MAYO's where he had a seven hour long surgery and had several complications, PE, and phrenic artery bleed. We know now that this cancer can not be cured or treated with chemo and that the tumors will be comming back. We just got back from Mayo's this last week and they found 2 more new spots on his CT. We go back in Jan. He is not ready for another surgery it has only been 7mos since the last one. I would love to hear from any one who knows anything about this cancer.

Because of the Holidays and other scheduling conflicts on the doctor's part the surgery was put off until Feb 24 2010.
I had a right neck dissection in which 28 Lymph Nodes were removed along with the outer jugular vein were removed. 8 of the 28 lymph nodes were canerous.

- Has any one heard of the port being placed on the arm??
- I haven't had surgery yet, but will have a large portion of the rectum and anal canal removed to to the high recurrence rate of this type of cancer
- 1993 excision of tumor with clear margins. Several biopsies and surgeries for anal ulcers due to scar tissue. Recurrance of orig. tumor excised in 2008 and analplasty to repair rectum. Stage 2 without clear margins. Side effects were a period of incontinence and continued pain with bowel movements
- 2001 resection of vertebre involved and rods inserted
- July 17, 2008 was my surgery. By that time my tumor had shrunk to the size of a softball. My surgery was 15hrs I recieved 14 pints of blood. I had a donor pelvic bone put in and a total hip replacement. I have alot of pain and a limp to go with it but I still have my leg. For now.
- Bilateral Mastectomy (1/11/2010) but I can't exactly remember much because the pain meds were excellent! :-) But about 4 weeks after, was really sore.

- from 6/06 to 8/06 I had 3 surgerys one to remove the cancers for bio. the another to remove tissue and limpnodes and one to put a port in for chemo

- January 5th 2009 is the date for the new ta ta's!
- I opted to have both my breasts removed and my ovaries. Reconstructed. Doing OK with that right now. But still not the same. At least I'm alive for kids.

This surgery was October of 2004.Later, I had the implant put in. That was January of 2006. I think having the muscle in my back redirected to make a pouch for my implant was more painful than the mastectomy.

But today, we all three are doing great.

- removal of lump and lymph node followed be tonsil removal side effects slight neck stiffness worse in cold weather
also went for the perg tube early on which did help
- 26 Feb 2008 radical neck dissection of right side of neck, Bilateral Tonsillectomy. The neck dissection took the right jugglar, muscle, 80 nodes, the 12th spinal accessory nerve, which paralyzed my right trapezius muscle which has resulted in the right should slumping forward somewhat, asome range of motion issues. The bilateral tonsillectomy, too the tonsillar pillar and to ensure that I had a clean margin, around the right tonsil, the 5th nerve was removed which handle the function of the right side of my tounge, which has faciltated some difficulties in swallowing.
