  • Has any one heard of the port being placed on the arm?? Skin/nipple spearing, bilateral Mastectomy with immediate reconstruction; the right Brest where the lump was found healed perfectly. The left side which was cancer free did not heal. The permanent implant was replaced with an expander implant and it did not heal either. The repeated reversal of the reconstruction was taking a toll on my moral and was also delaying the treatment. We decided to leave the left breast area to heal so quimo can begin. Once completed, the reconstruction will be attempted once again. Originally, it was thought that I did not need a port because the lymph nodes were clean. However, I do have to have one implanted and will done on Wed. - Yolanda

  • Dec. 6, 2010: Went into the Marin General ER with (what I thought) was bad food poisoning. Turned out to be a carcinoid tumor wrapped around my intestines and appendix. The doctor removed part of the lower intestine, tumor and appendix. He put it all in a bucket and showed it to my wife in the waiting room. It took about five months to recover from all that. My system is still kinda tender. Summer 2011: Right hemicolectomy at Stanford to remove some lymph nodes that showed signs of cancer. It took a few months before the sutures really healed and longer before I felt I could get back into a normal routine. - Derek

  • Interesting to learn how chemotherapy and radiation can actually cause cancer cells to mutate and become resistant and difficult to destroy. • My only surgeries other than the lymph node biopsy I had - were all for ports to be placed. I've had 3 total. One through my entire first treatment, and so far 2 for this time around. My first port was placed fine, except that I got a collapsed lung from where the surgeon cut my lung on accident. 2nd port just always gave us trouble, and kept getting stuck until one day it just quit working. Would flush, nothing. Had to be replaced. 3rd port - it works great but the Dr had such a hard time getting it in that a lot of blood went down around my lung causing me a lot of pain for about a month every time I took a breath. We actually had to stop treatment for a month until this went away. - Rachel

  • Surgery: Craniotomy at Right Temporal Love for full tumour removal Date: October 21, 2010 Hospital Stay: 4 days Side Effects: Initially the pressure in my head was really bad but that was due to swelling of the brain from surgery and I was on steroids to control that. The steroids that I was on however gave me major hallucinations to the point that I tried escaping the hospital on one occassion. This of course was controlled by a dosage change when it was brought to the attention of my attending physicians. 4 months post surgery:I still get horrible headaches. I find that it hurts to lay back and put full pressure on my head at night and many mornings I wake up with headaches. I was informed that this is normal and will last for some time so really you just have to learn some coping techniques to get by. I sometimes still get what I call "skull pain" that feels like there is pressure around where the incision was but that again is normal. 6 months post surgery: I am no longer getting headaches and only get a pressure behind my right eye when the Barometric pressure changes. - Tara

  • 2/16/2011 first scheduled surgery - endured preparation (i.e. radio isotope injection for lymph node mapping) mamogram for wire localization showed 2 new unknown masses. After surgeon review, 20 minutes prior to surgery - cancelled and advised I needed another biopsy. I was emotionally destroyed and broke down sobbing. I withdrew inward and was unable to speak to anyone, including my husband, for 2 days. I then underwent another (new and more involved) excruciating biopsy. Thankfully they were benign. Surgeon called on Thursday and surgery rescheduled following Monday 2/28/11. I was extremely quiet and reserved which bothered both my husband and surgeon. When asked what was going on, I said I didn't believe or trust anyone or anything, and until I was laying on the operating table, I could not get my hopes, belief up that my cancer was being removed. Surgery was a little more than I expected and had minor complications with extreme vomitting (anesthesia and pain meds) and stayed over-night. I had to have stomach meds 1/2 hour before taking any pain control meds to eliminate vomitting for next 4 weeks. Also woke up to severe pain in opposite shoulder (way I was positioned during surgery) and still have pain and numbness in thumb. I just began physical therapy last week, while there for daily radiation treatments. Will advise progress. - Constance

  • April 11, 2008 - lumpectomy. Other than slight soreness and tenderness, I felt great after my lumpectomy and had little pain. I found it enormously annoying that I couldn't shower without wrapping it in Saran wrap, couldn't lift anything, do much, and couldn't drive, but I felt good and didn't have to use pain medication. The only weird thing was that my right nipple was pointed to the right of my body (rather than facing front) and appeared to be dented and creased, which took some getting used to. Today my breast looks more normal, but it is still slightly creased and dented. The breast is smaller and I have to wear padded underwire bras for symmetry, but at least my nipple is facing front again! On December 11,2008 I had to have a total and complete hysterectomy since the cancer was hormonally driven. Since I could not take Tamoxifen or Arimedex as they are potent hormone/antihormone drugs and could give me a recurrence, a hysterectomy was my only option. I had it done via the DaVinci robot at Sloan Kettering...it was a Laparoscopic Vaginal hysterectomy. Physically I was tired at first, but I actually felt great...I was pain free for the first time in 40 + years. But hormonally and mentally? I was a wreck for a long time, especially since I was estrogen dominant and my estrogen levels were far higher than those of other women in menopause. It lasted for a year plus and threw me into a devastating depression (mixed with major anger) for almost 3 years. - Alive And Thriving

  • Bilateral Mastectomy March 30, 2010 with left breast being prophylactic with immediate reconstruction. After 6 weeks of recovering from the mastectomy, I seen my oncologist and he decided since I was node negative to put me on tamoxifen due to the tumor size being so small plus my receptors were positive which is an aggresive form of cancer. I have been taking tamoxifen for 6 weeks now and feel pretty good, except for constipation and now take two laxative pills daily to help with this and just recently got hives. I am on steroids to get rid of those. - Stephanie
  • Bilateral mastectomy November 7, 2011. I chose this route because my sister died from breast cancer and I didn't want to risk having it return to the other breast. • Biopsy: 3/06, hurt like hell. Had a needle biopsy first but it did not harvest enough tissue so the surgical biopsy was necessary. Port-a-cath insertion: 4/06, Periodic pain although it is more annoying than painful most of the time. Oopherectomy: 5/06, The burning was the most painful part of this surgery. It went away fairly quickly though. Hip nail procedure: 9/06, Learning to walk again and learning to walk up and down stairs again was painful, but better than having a full hip replacement if I broke the hip. This was a profelactic measure as there were lesions on the base of the hip ball. Kyphoplasty: 2/07, Really improved the pain in my back which wasn't helped by radiation treatment. - Barbara
  • Breast cancer No. 1. Surgery left me with some lymph oedema in the left arm, but the exercises helped and this is now barely noticeable. Leiomyosarcoma 2009: Can still sometimes feel the 'join' where my guts were resectioned and this can be a little uncomfortable. Breast cancer No. 2 2011: The nature of the reconstruction made it really hard to stand straight for about 3 months after the op. Also a tiny part of the new boob 'died' as it lost its blood supply temporarily - its taken 6 months to heal fully but is ok now. - Marneyd

  • Hopefully a lumpectomy after chemo has shrunken the mass; otherwise a mastectomy; reconstructive surgery. Post Op. note: bilateral mastectomy after two attempts at lumpectomy - good thing because undetected cancer was found in both nipples. It's all in a jar now! - Sonja

  • I had a biospy first & it turned out positive of cancer. I then had another surgery, to check the lymph nodes, thank God, they were neg., after that one I got staff infection & boy it was worst pain than the surgery itself. I was on 1000 mg of infection for almost 2 wks. Well, after I found out I had cancer, I was in shock for around a mon. or so, so were my parents, we could not look at each other without crying. It felt like I had been given a death sentence. You know, when you hear the big "C" word, everyone thinks, the big "D" word & I'm here to tell you, it's not always true. Then one day I was talking to a friend & she told me, Denise, you have to take hold of this thing & show it your not a quiter. That your gonna fight this with all you got, cause if you don't, it'll take you over & it will win. Well, needless to say, something just clicked & I woke up & from then on I fought this thing & 3 years later, here I am. - Denise Carter

  • I opted for a lumpectomy, mainly because I didn't want to lose my hair! Since the cancer was agressive and had traveled to my lymph nodes (7 out of 12), I went through chemo and lost my hair anyway. The surgery was October 2002. I had an emergency surgery to install a medi-port after the second chemo treatment because my veins went on strike. Next up: oophrectomy. They removed my ovaries. Oh to be in menopause at age 40. Is it hot in here to you? - Hayley Townley

  • In the long run? Probably worse than any of the rest of the ordeal. I HATED losing a breast. Especially the nipple. No reconstruction can restore that, regardless of what plastic surgeons can do to create a fake one. Oh, and it was performed on my 44th birthday in Dec. 2003, which didn't help matters any. - Dawn

  • October 2010- colonoscopy showed a "polyp" too large to remove at the beginning of my colon near the cecum. Biopsy did not show any cancer, just abnormal cells and I was told the polyp would need removed either way. Continued working and named polyp "Albert" December 3rd 2010- scheduled for a "SILS" procedure: single incision laparoscopic surgery to remove "Albert", supposed to be back to work in 4 weeks. Yeah, right... Wake up to the Dr telling me he had to do an open surgery so he could get at my liver and lymph nodes. Some lymph nodes removed but liver has too many lesions to do anything. My polyp was trying to punch thru the colon and grab my gall bladder, luckily it wasn't successful. Went from being "no big deal polyp" to "you have stage 4 colon cancer" Was told an oncologist would be in to see me the next day. Wasn't going to be able to eat until I passed gas, nothing but ice chips, morphine pump, walks down the hall and breathing treatments for 4 days. December 28th: surgery to put in a port for chemo, with first treatment to be given the 29th (next day) - Kat B

  • Sepember 30 removal and resection of 14cm of colon and rectum. 5 of 20 lymph nodes were infected. Because of type 2 diabetes recovery was slow and developed an abscess from where the resection did not heal. A Cook drain was installed to drain the abscess. After 7 months the abscess has not fully closed and I await the doctor's decision to "glue" the abscess and resection. Because of the difficulty of the surgery I am using an Ileostomy. Because of the lack of healing I am no longer eligible for adjuvant chemotherapy. - Ben

  • The most recent surgery involves the removal of section C7 of the spinal column, which had been eaten away by the tumour. An artificial titanium support was installed. For three weeks, my mother was hospitalised and could not walk for several days. With rehab, she began to walk and can do basic things on her own, but her health has been very frail. The area around the incision, at the front and back of the neck, are continuously sore, even almost two months after the surgery. She also lost her voice, and will have to wear a neck brace for 3-6 months. - Formosa

  • I had surgery in May 2007 and have been cancer-free for 3 1/2 years. Then all of a sudden I had some very slight spotting again, so I went to my doctor who did a biopsy on a nodule he found in a gyn exam. It turned out to be cancerous, so I will have an operation on January 4th to remove the quarter-sized tumor. I think radiationn treatment will follow. I will know soon enough, but I am very apprehensive about the results of the operation. I did not think I would have a recurrence of the cancer after 3 1/2 years, but now I am worried because I did not reach that "5-year cured benchmark." My father had melanoma and died at about the five year point. - Pat

  • The surgeon, an excellent surgeon, recommended a lobectomy on the right lung. Surgery was performed on July 13, 2009. The surgeon found the nodule was cancerous and had grown in an area of the lung damaged by a fungal infection, cryptocaucus. My recuperation period in the hospital was twelve days, the release prolonged due to a pneumothorax (collapsed lung). The treatment for this was the most painful thing I have EVER encountered. It's called Pleurodesis and consists of putting one of any number of chemicals (sclerosing agents or sclerosants) into the pleural space by way of the existing chest tube. The sclerosant irritates the pleurae which results in inflammation (pleuritis) and causes the pleurae to stick together. I don't recommend this to cure boredom but it did work!! - Dawn

  • I've had so many surgeries it's not even funny. From the day the doctor called my mom and told her to get me to a hospital NOW, until today, I have been relentlessly tortured in every which way possible for the greater good or some bullshit like that. I had two biopsies in the same spot, one was with just shots and no numbing medication and ther other was actual open surgery. Then they had to clean it out because they didn't check it and it got infected and couldn't heal properly. Then it finally did, but then they had to open me up again to put my port in my chest but since my diagnosis, I've stopped working out. All I can do is eat and eat and eat because of the steroids they're giving me so Im growing immensely! Well, that tilted the port in my chest and they almost can't get to it so they may need to cut me open a fourth time. Everytime I go into surgery they put a long scope down my throat into my chest so I can breath is I start to slide. Well when they take it out, you wont be able to swallow your foods for the next 3 days or so. Waking up initially is scary to because there's something covoring your entire face and all you can see is up and hear groggy voices. you're in a lot of pain to. - Perry Alan Wargnier Jr

  • My mom was in surgery about 5 days later. By this time she was absolutely miserable b/c of the fluid which had built up in her belly. My mom is a tiny woman, 5ft and just over 100lbs and the doctor removed 6 LITERS of fluid during the surgery. She also removed, in her words, "anything that my mom didn't need" which included: ovaries, F tubes, uterus, cervix, appendix, omentum, and any cancer that had "planted" itself on her lining, diaphram, and colon intestines. (Just in case there is anyone out there who is clueless like I was: She did this with a suction devise that she said literally sucks the cancer right off. She also explained that just because the cancer is on the surface of an area or organ does not mean that it has metastasized to that organ/area. That was much welcomed news to me!) - StephLoves

  • August 2004 tumor removed from pancreas and took part of pancreas with it and removed the spleen. My father was told that he would not have to have chemo and that he would live a normal life that they got all the cancer and that was it. We should have made him get a second opinion you see the cancer that he was diagnosed with is very rare about 1 in 25 million people. the doctors didn't know enough about it. well two years later he started having the same symtoms as before very low blood sugars (he is not diabetic) so when he went back to the doctors they discovered that he had several very large tumors on and in his liver. We took him to MAYO's where he had a seven hour long surgery and had several complications, PE, and phrenic artery bleed. We know now that this cancer can not be cured or treated with chemo and that the tumors will be comming back. We just got back from Mayo's this last week and they found 2 more new spots on his CT. We go back in Jan. He is not ready for another surgery it has only been 7mos since the last one. I would love to hear from any one who knows anything about this cancer. - Cathy

  • Open distal pancreatectomy and splenectomy is the type of surgery I had for my pancreatic cancer in January of 07..side effects..digestion issues....especially for the spicier foods that I love and anything gassy...peppers,cucumbers, onions, broccoli, and cabbage..must stay at a minimum and I hate this if I were to put any combo of 2 or more of these things in a salad I would be extremely ill. when I first came home from the hospital finishing a tv dinner was often more than I could handle. • I had to have an Embolisation first, which unfortunately took alot longer than what they thought, as the tumor was so big and had a major blood supply going to it. My operation was held on my 30th birthday, so unfortunately it will be a birthday I will always remember for the wrong reasons. My operation took 12 hours, and I was kept asleep for a further 12. When I woke up, I was told that they had to leave part of the tumor in due to side effects it may cause if taken out. I was and still am unable to swallow so at first I had a feeding tube running down through my nose, then after a week I had a peg fitted. I have been told that there is a possibility I may never swallow again, and I am finding this so hard to come to terms with. - Katie

Because of the Holidays and other scheduling conflicts on the doctor's part the surgery was put off until Feb 24 2010. • Only surgery so far was the FNA and the installation of a mediport. FNA was easy, I was awake and talking to the doctor the entire time. Mediport install use "concious sedation" but I fell asleep before they started. A lot more bruising than I expected from talking to the doctors and nurses before the operation. I find the mediport a bit intrusive, but I imagine I will get used to it (it has only been in for a week, and the incision has not healed). - Tim

  • Removed left tonsil and hen egg size tumor from behind and above tonsil on March 8,2011. I was sent home on the next day, with medications for infection and pain. the area around surgery was painful, but meds helped. after 8 days I stopped using pain meds. I notice more than the normal amount of mucus in my mouth. When I looked in the mirror, I was surprised to see the big hole in the left side of the roof of my mouth. It is now March22 and depression has hit, I know that I have been told that its curable and treatable, I am wondering what all of these life changing experiences are that I keep hearing my Dr speak about. Going tomorrow to a consult with medical people about chemo and radiation. I have an upcoming PET scan. - Qm2

  • Surgery was conducted on Nov 8th 2010 and lasted 8 1/2 hours. Surgery consisted of partial tonsilectomy (left tonsil) and removal of 40 lymph nodes. Remained in ICU 12 days; 10 days heavily sedated due to "being a bad patient" (combative). Could not drink liquids without them shooting through my nostrils for 2 weeks. I could manage one small ice chip but not two. A PET scan revealed one lymph node that probably was malignant. This necessitated radiation treatment. - Tomski

  • This was in June. After healing from the Ablation, I visited my ENT and he scheduled for a PET scan which came out suspicious. Next the Biopsy which he removed 85% of my right tonsil and tumor, but could not get it all. Narrow throat opening. The Path on the Biopsy indicated SCC Stage II. The ENT felt it was Stage I, but treated as Stage II. THere were no lymph nodes involved and was lateralized to the right side tonsil. Felt it did not involve the base of tongue. I felt some sore throat after the partial tonsil and tumor removal that lasted 3-weeks. No real bad pain and I healed well. - Don

  • They removed the tumor by going throught the urethral tube. October 30th 07 was my surgery date and I had a great doctor. I had chemo injected into my bladder right after surgery as a preventive method. I had a hysterectomy in Feb 08 as a preventive surgery because of where the tumor had been removed from. The recovery for this was 12 weeks long and very painful. Still have side-effects from that last surgery. - Klaude
