I am in need of someone others out here that are going thru what I am please! I have invasive Ductal Cancer, had surgery July 9th 2008 lumpectomy and sentinal node, node negative….tumor was 1.9 cm pro and estro postive stage 1 grade 1. I see the Onocoligist and was asked about signing up for a trial at that time ‘oncotype dx’ I was unsure because at first when I had asked if it was his loved one that had the same thing that I had what would he do, he said chemo ‘because of the tumor size’ along with hormoanal therapy and Radiation…the oncotype DX random picks those that fall in the mid level of this testing for Chemo so my changes if I fell mid range where a 50/50 chance I would get the chemo which at that time I thought my doctor said was what he would suggest I have…so I decided not to join in the trial but to have the oncotype DX test done on my tumor to see where the reacurrance level fell and of course it fell right in the mid range where if I had signed up for the trail I would have not had the chance to decide if or not I wanted the chemo but rather have my name put in a hat and drawn…now that this test is done my doctor is telling me that chemo may not be of benefit to me gave me a script for tamax and set me up to see the Radioligist…so can anyone out here please tell me if they have or have not had chemo in the same case as I have and what they have been told and what if any thoughts you have on this…I am considering a second option and I know time is if essence like 194 days is what is suggested the longest one should ever wait on treatments
I also should mention I lost my mother ‘who was my best friend in the whole world to breast cancer advanced to the bone’ and my mothers sister ‘my aunt’ to breast cancer that spread to the lungs and brain…high family history of cancer…also my tumor was missed on my mammo On Dec 21 2007 caused by dense tissue, luckly I felt the tumor in June so who really knows how long it was there before that because when they ran another mammo before the biopsy it still did not show even at the size it was but in the ultra sound and MRI there it showed, so take note to all that are told they have dense breast tissue!

You may want to be tested for HER2. Especially if you have family history.

I can’t stress to you enough to follow your gut. I scored high on the oncotype dx and still denied Chemo. I had the lowest mitosis rate (chemo doesn’t work on slow multiplying cells) and was a triple positive. My doctors wanted me on Herceptin but I had to have Chemo to get the herceptin. The FDA did not approve any other way. My tumor was only 9mm with no lymph node involvement. I have never looked back because I did my research, followed my gut and in the end they were my ultimately my decisions I had to live with.
