Initially I had pain in my knees, back, and hips. My primary physician believed I was starting to develop osteoporosis and arthritis, so I began taking Boniva and other vitamins. My joint pain had not subsided, and about two months later, I developed a deep cough and had difficulty swallowing. My daughter rushed me to the ER, and after I had a chest x-ray, I also had to get a PET scan and MRI. I knew my outlook was not good before we even got the results back. The oncologist found two spots on my lung, and the cancer had spread to two lymph nodes on the other side of my chest wall. Like is said- not good news, but I have an amazing team of physicians, and a supportive family to help me through this. I couldn't go through this without them. My family gives me something to live for!

Weight loss, then weight gain, fatigue/tiredness, "swollen glands" (or so they kept telling me until it was discovered that my neck was full of cancer), a general feeling of "otherness" -- even before the lumps became palpable, I felt something was off. I told several doctors, "I know this sounds crazy, but I feel like I'm living in someone else's body." Other strange, small symptoms: my forearms were sometimes insanely itchy with a blotchy sunburn-type rash, I often ran a low fever, my hair got very dry and breakable, and I craved weird foods as if I was pregnant.

No symptoms, and no primary found on skin or otherwise. A solitary pulmonary nodule was found via unrelated CT scan of my chest. Monitoring revealed that the nodule grew from 6.6mm to 1.1cm within 4 months, so surgery was opted. It was the surgical pathology which revealed the cancer, and later the full pathology as melanoma.
I found a lump under my right arm and after many tests, the final result was melanoma.
Just a discoloration on my upper arm; had been there for years, but had developed a black quadrant, and had a "buzzy" feeling on occasion. One caregiver had told me it was "nothing", years ago. When I started this new doctor, he said "let's take a look at it", and sure enough, it was the dreaded melanoma.

No symptoms that really stood out as odd; just had a strange feeling that I needed to get checked out. It was very weird. Turns out I had a nodule, but it could not really be felt because it was exactly in the center of my thyroid (isthmus). Probly the whole summer before my diagnosis i began to feel fatigued. sometimes id experience feeling like i had low blood sugar and would have to sit down suddenly because i felt so awful. as it progressed i just dragged and dragged. at the time i worked at taco bell and was told i was the best worker but by the time i quit i certainly had dropped out of that position. its not that i was lazy but i was just so exhausted and had to call off alot. finaly i just didnt feel good. it was a jewish holiday and i was supposed to go to the celebration that night but i stayed home instead. i called off work for two weeks and only got worse. it got so bad that i spent the entire day and night sleeping. i was barely eating or drinking. i remember once putting a grape in my mouth and falling asleep immediately after. LOl or the time my friend called me and i asked him to hold a sec. i blew my nose forgot he was on the phone and fell asleep. 20 min later i woke up and saw he was still on the phone. lol i finaly saw a dr and they told me i had strep throat. after taking anti biotics for 10 days and no change i went to the ER. i was dangerously dehydrated, anemic, and had huge lumps on my shins that was tender like a bruise and very feverish. Ill always remember that day cuz i went into that ER and never came back out. it felt like forever waiting on different test results. when the doctor finaly came in and told us i didnt really understand. in fact i didnt even know that leukemia was a cancer. treatments started so fast it all blacked out and i dont really remember any of it. but there was my symptoms.

Mike's lymph nodes in his neck were swollen and doctors thought at first it was something else. But, after a couple of months, Mike knew something wasn't right. So, a surgeon removed one of the lymph nodes and came out of surgery and told me he was 99% sure Mike had some type of cancer. Later, it was discovered that he had cancerous lymph nodes not only in his neck but 2 other places on his body. The doctors at Vanderderbilt then determined it was AML.

He biopsied it and told me to get a MRI to make sure there was no cancer growing under it....the MRI was fine and the biopsy came back benign...so I had the surgery to remove it....then a week later the Dr called me to tell me the biopsy from the surgery came back squimas cell cancer of the anal canal! I was like what is that??? He said. Anal cancer. We call it the Farah Fawcett disease....my next words...she died from that! Great bedside maner plus he forgot to tell me the 1st biopsy came back severe displasia benign. Maybe I wouldn't have been sooooo shocked!!!! I'm 46. I thought I had the worst hemorrhoid in America--popping out like a Jack-in-the-box, along with some bleeding.
Have experienced bright red blood from time to time with no other symptoms. After talking to doctor, I dismissed this as nothing to worry about. About one year ago I discovered a small bump inside my anus. Doctor thought it was a hemorrhoid and prescribed suppositories and fiber supplement. At this point I had experienced no pain, just occasional bright red blood. As time went on, the bump became larger and harder. Then, I experienced itching and soreness after bowel movements. Thanks to "Dr. google", I decided that my hemorrhoid had thrombosed (clotted). I returned to my doctor, endured a painful exam and she referred me to a surgeon (still thinking it was a hemorrhoid and that I probably needed hemorrhoidectomy). Upon examination, the surgeon told me it felt a little harder than a hemorrhoid should be and he wanted to biopsy it while I was under anesthesia. The biopsy showed "invasive non-keratinizing sqamous cell carcinoma, moderate to poorly differentiated. No lymphovascular invasion identifed.
Rectal bleeding during bowel movements. Like most people here, I thought it was due to hemorrhoids since I've been plagued with them most of my adult life. I also never feel empty afterwards. I have had some fatigue and feeling of fullness in my abdomen, too, but am not sure that it is related.

What Mesothelioma Cancer Survivors said about their Cancer Symptoms.
chronic cough, shortness of breath, weakness, fatigue, anemia
28 lb Mass of 100's of tumors stemming from my peritoneum. Basically your peritoneum allows your organs to glide around in your abdomen. It produces and absorbs fluid. My peritoneum stopped working correctly and continued to flood my abdomen with cyst pockets. I went for many therapy drains which included abdomen taps into these fluid pockets, draining 4 liters of fluid at a time to remove this toxic fluid. The amount of mass and fluid filled my abdomen to the stage where it blocked, impeded, and mangled organs with my abdomen. Ouch! So painful. Some needle taps could not safely reach through my abdomen and it was necessary to tap through my pelvis to reach some cyst pockets. I continually met with doctors who told me my condition was benign! This fluid glowed like mountain dew. Sometimes it was brown and bloody during my more painful periods. Eventually it mangled my ovaries so severely they did metastasize I lost so much work. I lost my jobs. I couldn't find any doctors to help me, only experimental procedures tapping these fluid pockets. I finally found a wonderful surgeon Dr. Paul Sugarbaker, who not only finally was able to cut this complicated mass from my body but saved my life. Life isn't the same. I have ongoing challenges. But I have learned acceptance. I thank God every day for the days I have. I love life!

She went to see her personal doctor, She sent Sarah to a ear, nose and throat doctor. That next day he did a biopsy on her tongue. The day after that 2-4-2010 she called me and told me she had cancer. This cancer spread to her lymph nodes then to her lungs. She passed away on 12-26th-2010.
