What Breast Cancer Survivors said about their Cancer Symptoms.
I actually didn't have any symptoms other than slight tenderness in my breast, which was identical to the kind I got days before my period. I did have a cyst on my breast (a clogged milk duct), but I had it for decades and pretty much didn't pay attention to it until it started to bother me during the fall of 2007. It was getting bigger, periodically caused sharp (but slight) twinges of pain, and seemed to be coming to a head. Trying to open it by myself was tough, as it was very clogged. One night however, and somewhat ironically, my husband must have intuited something was wrong when he ran upstairs to our bedroom (I was in bed) and insisted that he drain it. I thought he was out of his mind and didn't want him to do it, but he insisted that he should for reasons I didn’t know at the time. When he broke it, copious amounts of this foul and fetid fluid drained out of the duct and the cyst disappeared. Months later, after my diagnosis and lumpectomy, the surgeon told us that my husband may have saved my life, as the cancer would have spread if the clogged duct grew larger and wasn’t drained.
I felt a lump about the size of a grape on my right breast. Just after I had my baby of 8 months old.
As I picked up my daughter after eating I thought she transferred food and left it on my chest so I placed her in the livingroom and tried to dust it off, but I shortly realize it wasn't food transfer...there was a lump in my breast.

My boyfriend thought his shoulder pain was due to pulling some muscles. After a couple of months of it getting worse...he thought ...oh my Lord...I bet I have a torn rotor-cuff. We only wish it was so... He went from those thoughts to the doctors finding a tumor on shoulder..(no problem, odds are that it is benign)...to hearing lung cancer with metastisis to shoulder and large bones... and 12-18 months??? I started logging this "journey" from MY perspective. The thoughts, feeling and poetry from someone who loves someone...who has cancer.

I was taking so many different antidepressants, antibiotics and other medications, I was beginning to wonder why I still felt so bad when I could barely feel at all... My third general physician sent me for my annual chest x-ray as I was a smoker. A small spot was found on my right upper lung. Referred to a pulmonologist, a CT scan was performed revealing a 1.6cm nodule with stellate margins. A Pet scan was performed revealing several areas of concern in both lungs. The pulmonologist recommended surgery and referred me to a surgeon.

Tightness in my throat, Clearing of the throat type cough increasing fatigue
None that I knew of before diagnosis. About a week before my hernia surgery I thought maybe I was coming down with a cold. My left ear and nostril were plugging up, at first nothing a yawn / blow wouldn't clear up...then...I started taking sudafed to clear it up...and it kind of felt like when I would blow...I couldn't get it out...and if I tried to sniff, I couldn't get it up...pretty frustrating...ALL of this cleared up with the first treatment.
All of the sudden I just couldn't walk without horrible hip pain. Thought it was from when the dog bowled me over outside in the winter time. Took 3 days off of work as I could barely walk to one room to another. Urgent care said it was muscular and 'stretched me out'. Likewise my own doctor a week later pulled and twisted my leg and that and Prednisone got me back walking again with an Xray and MRI scheduled for 2 weeks down the road.

I found a large hard lymph node tumor in my right super clavicle neck. That tumor was growing a few more off spring tumors around it, then it spread to my left side of neck. Both sides of my neck were bulging with noticeable lumps. I was having severe night sweats with extreme fatigue and constant itching on my lower back and legs. I have narcolepsy so I am still battling that fatigue even while I take the amphetamines to help me stay awake. I started getting a funny phloem in my chest that would make me cough and it would get stuck in the back of my throat. Whenever I went to talk, I would have to clear my throat from that thick mucous. No symptoms, and no primary found on skin or otherwise. A solitary pulmonary nodule was found via unrelated CT scan of my chest. Monitoring revealed that the nodule grew from 6.6mm to 1.1cm within 4 months, so surgery was opted. It was the surgical pathology which revealed the cancer, and later the full pathology as melanoma.
I found a lump under my right arm and after many tests, the final result was melanoma.
Just a discoloration on my upper arm; had been there for years, but had developed a black quadrant, and had a "buzzy" feeling on occasion. One caregiver had told me it was "nothing", years ago. When I started this new doctor, he said "let's take a look at it", and sure enough, it was the dreaded melanoma.

What Thyroid Cancer Survivors said about their Cancer Symptoms.
Periodic sore throat, thyroid swelling, Hashimoto's Thyroiditis (contributing factor, at least).
Didn't have any symptoms
None, went in because I had lost my voice. GP found large lump on my thyroid (Wednesday), Friday was scheduled with the surgeon for the biopsy, the following Wednesday I was in surgery
Occassionally strep-like feeling on each side of throat for nine years. I thought it was the weather's change. That's pretty much it. I had cancer scare for two months before surgery/final result. The biopsy came up with many 'possible', 'might', 'maybe' with all names of cancer cells. *UPDATE* Do not ever rely on biopsy results until after the post-surgery result.
Sudden appearance of large lump in my neck is what started it all.
Lump in throat, swollen thyroid. Since I am a control freak, I pushed both my daughter and the doctors to investigate.

None initially., but a month prior to surgery I felt like food, pills, etc. were lodged in my throat and would take a good hour plus for my throat to feel normal

-Hard, sometimes painless, sometimes tender lump in neck. Turned out to be an enlarged cervical lymph node on the right side of my neck. -Extreme fatigue; tiring out very easily -Low-grade fever -Frequent headaches
I have always had a big neck and was overweight. When my new doctor saw me, he asked me about it and started the testing.
Felt pressure on throat like "tight turtleneck", July 2nd. Dr. didn't feel anything so probably just stress or acid reflux. Two weeks later could feel lump on right side. Ultrasound confirmed 2cm mass on August 2, 2010. Fine-Needle Biopsy on September 2, 2010 and the "call" on September 10, 2010.
i had never felt better in my life. i hardly ever got sick and i really just felt great. i went in to my primary doctor about a lump above my collor bone and he noticed the nodule on my thyroid. the lump over my collar bone was a 4cm cancerous lymph node
Large lump/ball in the left side of my neck.
It's been about 4 years since i have been in and out of appointments trying to find out if i had anything wrong with my thyroid i have had about 4 biopsies and in the past they were all inconclusive. I don't know what other symptoms i have had but since August of this year 2010 i had horrible bronchitis in the middle of summer it lasted for about 4 weeks horrible cough's sore throat killer headaches and lack of appetite. Since them my life has changed when my bronchitis seem to go away i had horrible heart palpitations had to go into the ER because i got so scared from my heart palpitations i was put on High blood pressure medication Norvasc. After that i was very depressed crying all the time i had to change my medication. I then went in for a physical and my doctor felt a lump on the right side of my thyroid she sent me to and ENT and he sent me to yet another ultra sound and another biopsy. I had a follow up appointment with my ENT and he told me that i had hurthle cells and needed to get it checked and removed surgically. My world felt apart and from there on i was frighten to have a surgery done. But i managed to stay strong until now that my doctor told me i had to have everything removed due to thyroid Cancer. I have been trying my best but im a complete wreck.
Absolutely none - found by mistake
First a nodule, then really fatigue, sore thoart, some sharp ear pain, and horse voice, and constantly clearing my throat.
I started having trouble swallowing food
lump in neck
Had persistent cough that lead to numerous tests which found the thyroid cancer. . . I still had the cough after surgery, but now it seems to be going away. Turns out the cough was due to food allergies and had nothing to do with the cancer. . . go figure!
Large nodule in throat. Endocrinologist says these are probably not related, but the timing is spot on (memory loss, fatigue, irregular menstrual cycle).
A year ago an ultrasound on my back revealed 2 nodules on my thyroid but 2 doctors refused to do further testing, "because that's never anything." Not even a "let's keep an eye on it." Later, I developed a raspy/hoarse voice and a small bump on my throat. Saw my ENT. The hoarseness didn't alert me before but it's worse since fna
I didn't recognize them as indicating cancer: some trouble swallowing, turtlenecks bothered me, a little hoarseness.

Bleeding during bowel movements for a few days, then nothing for a couple of months. After this and over a period of two weeks a strong feeling of never having completed a bowel motion became apparent. This happened very, very quickly as there was almost nothing to indicate that anything was amiss beforehand except for the bleeding, to which my response was to amble off to my GP and for her to arrange for a colonoscopy in the new year sometime for a check up. It was over Christmas 2011 that the tumour seemingly grew rapidly, and after coming back from camping I did a self-examination (and I really, really urge anyone to do this as it was the clincher for me) and took myself to hospital rather than wait. Best decision I've made in my life.

What Mesothelioma Cancer Survivors said about their Cancer Symptoms.
chronic cough, shortness of breath, weakness, fatigue, anemia
28 lb Mass of 100's of tumors stemming from my peritoneum. Basically your peritoneum allows your organs to glide around in your abdomen. It produces and absorbs fluid. My peritoneum stopped working correctly and continued to flood my abdomen with cyst pockets. I went for many therapy drains which included abdomen taps into these fluid pockets, draining 4 liters of fluid at a time to remove this toxic fluid. The amount of mass and fluid filled my abdomen to the stage where it blocked, impeded, and mangled organs with my abdomen. Ouch! So painful. Some needle taps could not safely reach through my abdomen and it was necessary to tap through my pelvis to reach some cyst pockets. I continually met with doctors who told me my condition was benign! This fluid glowed like mountain dew. Sometimes it was brown and bloody during my more painful periods. Eventually it mangled my ovaries so severely they did metastasize I lost so much work. I lost my jobs. I couldn't find any doctors to help me, only experimental procedures tapping these fluid pockets. I finally found a wonderful surgeon Dr. Paul Sugarbaker, who not only finally was able to cut this complicated mass from my body but saved my life. Life isn't the same. I have ongoing challenges. But I have learned acceptance. I thank God every day for the days I have. I love life!

My daughter Sarah noticed a sore on her tongue. Thought it was from biting it. she went to a doctor. He diagnosed her with thrush, gave her meds and sent her on her way. Meds did nothing.. she went back to the same doctor for a 2nd and 3rd time. He told her there was nothing more he could do for her and to stop wasting both his and her time. My daughter lived with this sore on her tongue for over a year. She woke up one morning in horrible pain and her tongue was black. She went to see her personal doctor, She sent Sarah to a ear, nose and throat doctor. That next day he did a biopsy on her tongue. The day after that 2-4-2010 she called me and told me she had cancer.
