What Breast Cancer Survivors said about their Cancer Symptoms.
I found a lump in my right breast just a few weekks after my mammogram.
I found a lump in my right breast during a self-breast exam.
Pain in both breast
Obvious lump in breast.
Lump on left Breast
lump self discovered
I actually didn't have any symptoms other than slight tenderness in my breast, which was identical to the kind I got days before my period. I did have a cyst on my breast (a clogged milk duct), but I had it for decades and pretty much didn't pay attention to it until it started to bother me during the fall of 2007. It was getting bigger, periodically caused sharp (but slight) twinges of pain, and seemed to be coming to a head. Trying to open it by myself was tough, as it was very clogged. One night however, and somewhat ironically, my husband must have intuited something was wrong when he ran upstairs to our bedroom (I was in bed) and insisted that he drain it. I thought he was out of his mind and didn't want him to do it, but he insisted that he should for reasons I didn’t know at the time. When he broke it, copious amounts of this foul and fetid fluid drained out of the duct and the cyst disappeared. Months later, after my diagnosis and lumpectomy, the surgeon told us that my husband may have saved my life, as the cancer would have spread if the clogged duct grew larger and wasn’t drained.
None of the ordinary. I had 2 pulmonary embolisms 7/14/2011 and 11/30/2011. In November the ER Doctor noticed my blood work was abnormal and called a Hematologist for a consult. She is also an Oncologist and discovered the breast cancer.
Felt a lump in my breast that hadn't been there before.
Absolutely no medical symptoms. I was not sick or tired, I had no physical discomfort. But I did feel a small lump -left breast, but it would disappear a week after my period. So I thought nothing of it.
While removing my clothes for bed I looked into the mirror and was shocked to notice that one side of my breast was larger than the other, fell to the inside, and felt like it had something in it. It made me think of the patients who came in with breast implants, since that’s what it felt like. A few months earlier I had noticed several times that my breasts seemed to be hot to the touch and I wondered if I had an infection.
None/Found my lump while doing a self breast exam.

pain from site, open cavity that bleeds and releases other not so pleasant things, weak
No symptons. Routine mammogram (which was delayed for several years [shame, shame on me!]).
None. I found my evil lump while showering, and even after I and my doc could feel it, the mammogram was "clear." It was then seen on ultrasound and MRI. NO family history. Genetic tests (BRCA 1 & 2) negative. During routine scans after breast cancer dx, a mass was found in my head. Turns out in addition to the bc, I have a benign meningioma - a brain tumor. My neurologist tells me these grow slowly and we can zap it with rads later, so I'll deal with that after I finish chemo and radiation for the breast cancer.
I found a lump myself one month after having my mammogram done.
Annual mammogram at 49. Not 50.
i had spontaneous discharge for a number of years. my gyno kept telling me it was nothing and the more i played with it, the more it would leak out. i was sent for mammograms year after year, but nothing was detected. then after about three years, i was given an ultrasound and it showed that I had four tumors. The biggest was 1 cm and that's how they determined that it was stage 1.
Found lump while in shower, 1 month following clean mammogram and ultrasound.
Found small lump that hurt a bit sometimes. Mammogram was clear. 4 months later mammogram was clear again but ultrasound showed something. Biopsy showed invasive ductal carcinoma and carcinoma in situ.
Visited GP with underarm symptoms, pain itching and discomfort. All symptoms were dismissed as trivial I was told to take a pain killer if the pain kept me awake at night! Luckily I was called for a routine mammograph in August 08 and that's when the fun began

Colon cancer: bowel discomfort and bloatedness for some weeks, sudden sharp pain at one point. Smaller/thinner stool, darker in colour. Spinal cancer: compression of the tumour on the nerve causing great soreness and pain on arms and hand. Section C7 reflects the left hand, while section T2 reflects more or less the right hand. The soreness and pains can get so bad that you cannot move your arms. Prolonged compression on the nerves can damage the nerve permanently, and if the tumour eats away the bone, the spine may collapse and result in complete paralysis...

I guess it all began on my 5th birthday. After months of bruising, nosebleeds, ear infections, chest colds, obnoxiously high fevers, and muscle pains so severe that I was unable to walk, I was diagnosed with ALL (acute lymphocytic leukemia). I went into remission a few months after treatment, and after a 3-year protocol I was pronounced a "full cure" at age 8. For 10 years I experienced absolutely no further symptoms, and just lived an extraordinarily normal & boring life without giving that stupid disease another thought. Then, I broke my arm. No big deal, right? Well, at my 10th annual follow-up checkup, I was told that - suprise! - I had localized osteosarcoma in my left radius (lower arm bone), and was in the early stages of AML (acute myelogenous leukemia). I underwent 1 year of chemo & radiation, as well as surgical removal of the osteogenic sarcoma & a bone graft (limb-salvage a complete success: my arm is still intact!). After going in and out of remission, I had a bone marrow transplant. 1 year later, I was pronounced in "full" remission, and discontinued all treatments the subsequent year. I had no further symptoms. 8 months ago I learned that my AML was no longer in remission. Here we go again :)
Tired, Drained, wasn't eating and lost loads of weight, muscle aching, brusing...
Probly the whole summer before my diagnosis i began to feel fatigued. sometimes id experience feeling like i had low blood sugar and would have to sit down suddenly because i felt so awful. as it progressed i just dragged and dragged. at the time i worked at taco bell and was told i was the best worker but by the time i quit i certainly had dropped out of that position. its not that i was lazy but i was just so exhausted and had to call off alot. finaly i just didnt feel good. it was a jewish holiday and i was supposed to go to the celebration that night but i stayed home instead. i called off work for two weeks and only got worse. it got so bad that i spent the entire day and night sleeping. i was barely eating or drinking. i remember once putting a grape in my mouth and falling asleep immediately after. LOl or the time my friend called me and i asked him to hold a sec. i blew my nose forgot he was on the phone and fell asleep. 20 min later i woke up and saw he was still on the phone. lol i finaly saw a dr and they told me i had strep throat. after taking anti biotics for 10 days and no change i went to the ER. i was dangerously dehydrated, anemic, and had huge lumps on my shins that was tender like a bruise and very feverish. Ill always remember that day cuz i went into that ER and never came back out. it felt like forever waiting on different test results. when the doctor finaly came in and told us i didnt really understand. in fact i didnt even know that leukemia was a cancer. treatments started so fast it all blacked out and i dont really remember any of it. but there was my symptoms.

Mike's lymph nodes in his neck were swollen and doctors thought at first it was something else. But, after a couple of months, Mike knew something wasn't right. So, a surgeon removed one of the lymph nodes and came out of surgery and told me he was 99% sure Mike had some type of cancer. Later, it was discovered that he had cancerous lymph nodes not only in his neck but 2 other places on his body. The doctors at Vanderderbilt then determined it was AML.

Three days of fresh dark blood
bleeding, hard internal lump.
Bleeding during bowel movements for a few days, then nothing for a couple of months. After this and over a period of two weeks a strong feeling of never having completed a bowel motion became apparent. This happened very, very quickly as there was almost nothing to indicate that anything was amiss beforehand except for the bleeding, to which my response was to amble off to my GP and for her to arrange for a colonoscopy in the new year sometime for a check up. It was over Christmas 2011 that the tumour seemingly grew rapidly, and after coming back from camping I did a self-examination (and I really, really urge anyone to do this as it was the clincher for me) and took myself to hospital rather than wait. Best decision I've made in my life.

What Mesothelioma Cancer Survivors said about their Cancer Symptoms.
chronic cough, shortness of breath, weakness, fatigue, anemia
28 lb Mass of 100's of tumors stemming from my peritoneum. Basically your peritoneum allows your organs to glide around in your abdomen. It produces and absorbs fluid. My peritoneum stopped working correctly and continued to flood my abdomen with cyst pockets. I went for many therapy drains which included abdomen taps into these fluid pockets, draining 4 liters of fluid at a time to remove this toxic fluid. The amount of mass and fluid filled my abdomen to the stage where it blocked, impeded, and mangled organs with my abdomen. Ouch! So painful. Some needle taps could not safely reach through my abdomen and it was necessary to tap through my pelvis to reach some cyst pockets. I continually met with doctors who told me my condition was benign! This fluid glowed like mountain dew. Sometimes it was brown and bloody during my more painful periods. Eventually it mangled my ovaries so severely they did metastasize I lost so much work. I lost my jobs. I couldn't find any doctors to help me, only experimental procedures tapping these fluid pockets. I finally found a wonderful surgeon Dr. Paul Sugarbaker, who not only finally was able to cut this complicated mass from my body but saved my life. Life isn't the same. I have ongoing challenges. But I have learned acceptance. I thank God every day for the days I have. I love life!

I had absolutely no symptoms. Mine was found through a kidney stone.
My cancer presented atypically. My very first symptom was not enlarged lymph nodes or fevers or itching, but severe bone pain in my lower back that radiated down into my left leg. This persisted for several weeks before I began experiencing fevers and night sweats. Sed rate was elevated but not extraordinarily. Doctors were baffled. First they thought it was lupus and then RA and then they told me it was all in my head - growing pains or some other lame-ass diagnosis. The symptoms continued and steadily worsened over the next several months before somebody finally had the sense enough to do an MRI and bone scan. These revealed a lesion near the L-4 vertebrate. A biopsy was performed and although the lesion did not have the characteristic features of lumbar osteomyelitis, that was the pathological diagnosis and what I was treated for. I underwent placement of PICC line in order to receive antibiotics for osteomyelitis. A chest x-ray was performed afterward to confirm correct placement of PICC line. It was at this time the radiologist detected lesions on the x-ray. I was referred to the Mayo Clinic. A CAT scan with IV contrast showed extensive mediastinal enlargement, mediastinal and hilar adenopathy, and lesions in the pulmonary parenchyma. The lumbar portion of the CAT scan reveled lymphatic involvement in the spinal region that was previously biopsied. A mediastinoscopy was performed but all tissue that was removed was identified as normal thymus. The surgeon then performed a thoracotomy and biopsied a large perihilar lymph node. The final pathology report showed nodular sclerosing Hodgkin's disease in the the lung and hilar lymph node, making it a stage 4B lesion. It took six months from the onset of symptoms until a definitive diagnosis could be made. My case was so atypical. There was never any palpable lymph nodes until the very end. In fact, the diagnosis was made almost by accident---by a random chest x-ray to determine proper placement of PICC line. I underwent six cycles of ABVD/MOPP and radiation to chest and spine. NED as of April 1992. July 1992 I began to experience night sweats and fevers. Sed rate was elevated but no palpable lymph nodes. CAT scan of chest in August 1992 revealed changes in the mediastinum which was suspicious of recurrence. Underwent biopsy at Mayo Clinic 8/92 but surgeon could find no evidence of disease. Symptomas continued unabated. Lesions evident on liver, but liver biopsy returned normal. A second thoracotomy a week later revealed Hodgkin's. Stage 4B with involvement in liver, spleen and anterior mediastinum. Returned home and received 3 cycles of DECAL salvage therapy followed by autologous stem cell transplant. NED as of 4/1993.
