Sickly for several years, always feeling out of sorts, never wanting to do anything or go anywhere (a little rough on the social life); stomach problems, body aches, infections, fevers, headaches, seriously quick failing eyesight & night blindness (this happened during the six weeks of fever)...ALWAYS sick (ALWAYS whiney)...went through the wringer with many a (mis)diagnosis: influenza bugs, mercury poisoning, allergies, fibromyalgia, blood poisoning, diverticulitis, depression, ulcerative colitis, dysentery, psychosomatic disorders, osteopenia, hypercalcemia, hyperparathyroidism, age, on and on...you start to wonder yourself...not that all diagnoses were incorrect but...missed A LOT of work, at one point a six-week stint with a constant high fever. I was taking so many different antidepressants, antibiotics and other medications, I was beginning to wonder why I still felt so bad when I could barely feel at all... My third general physician sent me for my annual chest x-ray as I was a smoker. A small spot was found on my right upper lung. Referred to a pulmonologist, a CT scan was performed revealing a 1.6cm nodule with stellate margins. A Pet scan was performed revealing several areas of concern in both lungs. The pulmonologist recommended surgery and referred me to a surgeon.

Just a discoloration on my upper arm; had been there for years, but had developed a black quadrant, and had a "buzzy" feeling on occasion. One caregiver had told me it was "nothing", years ago. Nauseous, severe pain in my liver like someone was stabbing me over & over again. Pain in my shoulder that radiated up through my veins in my neck, like someone was blowing my veins up with air. Pain was so bad it was extremely hard to breath, sleep, sit down or lay down. Very lethargic.
As they say, ovarian cancer "whispers" and in my mom's case it was true to form. She started eating slightly less, started having slight/occasional heart burn, and was ever so slightly less energetic. Unfortunately, none of us noticed these things until after she was diagnosed. Here are the symptoms/events that led to her diagnosis: The week before my mom went to the doctor she mentioned a few times that her stomach wasn't feeling good and that she wasn't eating too much. That Sunday she felt overly full after having only toast and coffee for breakfast, she continued to feel "bloated" all day and was unable to eat. The next morning her pants were tight around her belly and she was still unable to eat. My sister (who is a nurse) told her to get to the Dr ASAP. Her GP couldn't fit her in until Thursday (3 days later) but my sister told her not to wait and to go to the walk in clinic and request a CT scan. She went and the walk in clinic doc set her up for a CT scan the following day. The next day my moms belly was even bigger than before and she had to stop several times in the parking lot b/c she said she "felt like she was going to pass out" the results were set to her GP who called her in on Wednesday to give her the results. My sister knew then that something was wrong since she suddenly was able to see her on Wednesday. By Thursday she was in to see the doctor who would later become her oncologist.

What Mesothelioma Cancer Survivors said about their Cancer Symptoms.
chronic cough, shortness of breath, weakness, fatigue, anemia
28 lb Mass of 100's of tumors stemming from my peritoneum. Basically your peritoneum allows your organs to glide around in your abdomen. It produces and absorbs fluid. My peritoneum stopped working correctly and continued to flood my abdomen with cyst pockets. I went for many therapy drains which included abdomen taps into these fluid pockets, draining 4 liters of fluid at a time to remove this toxic fluid. The amount of mass and fluid filled my abdomen to the stage where it blocked, impeded, and mangled organs with my abdomen. Ouch! So painful. Some needle taps could not safely reach through my abdomen and it was necessary to tap through my pelvis to reach some cyst pockets. I continually met with doctors who told me my condition was benign! This fluid glowed like mountain dew. Sometimes it was brown and bloody during my more painful periods. Eventually it mangled my ovaries so severely they did metastasize I lost so much work. I lost my jobs. I couldn't find any doctors to help me, only experimental procedures tapping these fluid pockets. I finally found a wonderful surgeon Dr. Paul Sugarbaker, who not only finally was able to cut this complicated mass from my body but saved my life. Life isn't the same. I have ongoing challenges. But I have learned acceptance. I thank God every day for the days I have. I love life!

Meds did nothing.. she went back to the same doctor for a 2nd and 3rd time. He told her there was nothing more he could do for her and to stop wasting both his and her time. My daughter lived with this sore on her tongue for over a year. She woke up one morning in horrible pain and her tongue was black. She went to see her personal doctor, She sent Sarah to a ear, nose and throat doctor. That next day he did a biopsy on her tongue. The day after that 2-4-2010 she called me and told me she had cancer. This cancer spread to her lymph nodes then to her lungs. She passed away on 12-26th-2010.

fatigue, weight loss, fevers
Enlarged, unusually hard cervical lymph node
I was tired all the time, but blamed it on being the mother of three small children and working 2nd shift. I stopped playing with my kids outside or even going outside with them. I'd let them play while I dozed in and out. I also had asthma-like symptoms for over a year and was actually diagnosed with asthma...or should I say "misdiagnosed" with asthma. I had shortness of breath, wheezing, and coughing jags. I had pains in my neck, which I thought were kinks and suddenly one day when I started rubbing my neck on January 21, 2009 it felt like a huge bulge. That whole day I had a horrible feeling after that and finally called to make an appointment with my doctor.

I found a lump above my left collar bone. I had hives on my forearms and occasional night sweats.
Most notably, I was itching horribly, and I lost 25+ lbs. Also, I wasn't sleeping and had vivid nightmares and night sweats when I did. I had a lumpy neck, fatigue, a cough that lasted for months, and finally, my left lung had collapsed (which lead to the diagnosis).
Nagging cough and weird lump above my collarbone.
Painful swollen lymph nodes, night sweats, fatigue, and constant fever.
My cancer presented atypically. My very first symptom was not enlarged lymph nodes or fevers or itching, but severe bone pain in my lower back that radiated down into my left leg. This persisted for several weeks before I began experiencing fevers and night sweats. Sed rate was elevated but not extraordinarily. Doctors were baffled. First they thought it was lupus and then RA and then they told me it was all in my head - growing pains or some other lame-ass diagnosis. The symptoms continued and steadily worsened over the next several months before somebody finally had the sense enough to do an MRI and bone scan. These revealed a lesion near the L-4 vertebrate. A biopsy was performed and although the lesion did not have the characteristic features of lumbar osteomyelitis, that was the pathological diagnosis and what I was treated for. I underwent placement of PICC line in order to receive antibiotics for osteomyelitis. A chest x-ray was performed afterward to confirm correct placement of PICC line. It was at this time the radiologist detected lesions on the x-ray. I was referred to the Mayo Clinic. A CAT scan with IV contrast showed extensive mediastinal enlargement, mediastinal and hilar adenopathy, and lesions in the pulmonary parenchyma. The lumbar portion of the CAT scan reveled lymphatic involvement in the spinal region that was previously biopsied. A mediastinoscopy was performed but all tissue that was removed was identified as normal thymus. The surgeon then performed a thoracotomy and biopsied a large perihilar lymph node. The final pathology report showed nodular sclerosing Hodgkin's disease in the the lung and hilar lymph node, making it a stage 4B lesion. It took six months from the onset of symptoms until a definitive diagnosis could be made. My case was so atypical. There was never any palpable lymph nodes until the very end. In fact, the diagnosis was made almost by accident---by a random chest x-ray to determine proper placement of PICC line. I underwent six cycles of ABVD/MOPP and radiation to chest and spine. NED as of April 1992. July 1992 I began to experience night sweats and fevers. Sed rate was elevated but no palpable lymph nodes. CAT scan of chest in August 1992 revealed changes in the mediastinum which was suspicious of recurrence. Underwent biopsy at Mayo Clinic 8/92 but surgeon could find no evidence of disease. Symptomas continued unabated. Lesions evident on liver, but liver biopsy returned normal. A second thoracotomy a week later revealed Hodgkin's. Stage 4B with involvement in liver, spleen and anterior mediastinum. Returned home and received 3 cycles of DECAL salvage therapy followed by autologous stem cell transplant. NED as of 4/1993.

Over a period of 3 months, my weight began to shift. Everything was moving north instead of south. I chalked it up to aging and odd things the body did. An ultra sound showed a massive tumor on my right ovary (20 cm). During the week it took to see a specialist, it grew to 44 cm. Surgery took place the next day and it was found that the point of origin was the appendix.
