Initially I had pain in my knees, back, and hips. My primary physician believed I was starting to develop osteoporosis and arthritis, so I began taking Boniva and other vitamins. My joint pain had not subsided, and about two months later, I developed a deep cough and had difficulty swallowing. My daughter rushed me to the ER, and after I had a chest x-ray, I also had to get a PET scan and MRI. I knew my outlook was not good before we even got the results back. The oncologist found two spots on my lung, and the cancer had spread to two lymph nodes on the other side of my chest wall. Like is said- not good news, but I have an amazing team of physicians, and a supportive family to help me through this. I couldn't go through this without them. My family gives me something to live for!
Shortness of breath, which almost entirely disappeared after my first chemo
Large, painful lump at the collar bone; vision impairment in left eye; impaired memory and judgment; loss of balance and blackouts. All symptoms materialized within a two-week period.
There was no symptoms. It was found on a Chest Xray that was done so my mother could have her second knee replacement. It wasn't there 7 months prior
Pain in back, weight loss very quick

Shortness of breath, cough, wheezing. All this was attributed to asthma.
shortness of breath
Sickly for several years, always feeling out of sorts, never wanting to do anything or go anywhere (a little rough on the social life); stomach problems, body aches, infections, fevers, headaches, seriously quick failing eyesight & night blindness (this happened during the six weeks of fever)...ALWAYS sick (ALWAYS whiney)...went through the wringer with many a (mis)diagnosis: influenza bugs, mercury poisoning, allergies, fibromyalgia, blood poisoning, diverticulitis, depression, ulcerative colitis, dysentery, psychosomatic disorders, osteopenia, hypercalcemia, hyperparathyroidism, age, on and on...you start to wonder yourself...not that all diagnoses were incorrect but...missed A LOT of work, at one point a six-week stint with a constant high fever. I was taking so many different antidepressants, antibiotics and other medications, I was beginning to wonder why I still felt so bad when I could barely feel at all... My third general physician sent me for my annual chest x-ray as I was a smoker. A small spot was found on my right upper lung. Referred to a pulmonologist, a CT scan was performed revealing a 1.6cm nodule with stellate margins. A Pet scan was performed revealing several areas of concern in both lungs. The pulmonologist recommended surgery and referred me to a surgeon.
I had suffered from right side pain in my rib area when I coughed or sneezed for about 3 years until my cancer was finally diagnosed. We looked at EVERYTHING else, but no one would have thought I could have lung cancer.

Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma Cancer Symptoms

What Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma Cancer Survivors said about their Cancer Symptoms.

Extreme shoulder and chest pain.
I had no symptoms. Chest pressure and shortness of breath due to iron deficiency anemia resulted in the CT scan that found my tumor.
Night Sweats Wheezing from throat Lack of energy
none until swollen lymph nodes appeared on the left side of my neck.
None. Discovered in routine chest xray required at my annual physical by my primary care Doctor, a self-proclaimed dinosaur.
A really bad smokers cough (when I don't smoke), night sweats, tiredness and loss of appetite.
Feeling pain in abdomin and imagining all those tumors growing
coughing, low grade fever, couldn't breathe while laying down
Night sweats - I think I had these for many years but never thought anything about them. They progressed to the point where every week I was having at least one or two. Itchiness - One night it was one leg, the next night the other. It only happened once. Sore tailbone - My tailbone got real sore about three months before I was diagnosed. Constipation - My colon swelled shut about five days before I was diagnosed. Loss of weight - I used to weigh 170 lbs back in my 20's and 30's. In my 40's it started dropping slightly, and my weight crept to the lower 160's. Sore legs - I started feeling a slight tingling in my legs six months before my diagnosis. The month before my diagnosis, I was taking Motrin regularly at night and hot showers focused on my legs which would provide temporary relief. And despite exercising, I was getting weaker in my legs and could hardly run. Tiredness - a few weeks before my diagnosis, I was feeling tired and needing to go to bed early all the time. Swollen lymph node in pelvis - The day before I was diagnosed, I had a huge swelling of the lymph node in my pelvic region.
Weight loss, then weight gain, fatigue/tiredness, "swollen glands" (or so they kept telling me until it was discovered that my neck was full of cancer), a general feeling of "otherness" -- even before the lumps became palpable, I felt something was off. I told several doctors, "I know this sounds crazy, but I feel like I'm living in someone else's body." Other strange, small symptoms: my forearms were sometimes insanely itchy with a blotchy sunburn-type rash, I often ran a low fever, my hair got very dry and breakable, and I craved weird foods as if I was pregnant.
Fatigue, swelling, depression, and so much more.
Mango sized tumor on left side of neck. Tumor grew rapidly of 72 hours
bone pain, fatigue, lump in neck, sweating day and night, lump in eye socket
no real cancer symptoms in the beginning, I felt great besides having some hives now and then, which appeared randomly. The rashes were real itchy, my Doctor thought I probably have an allergic reactions to some food I am eating. I had the hives for about 6 months when I noticed a painless enlarged lymph node on the side of my neck in August 2010. The lymph node was removed for a biopsy in December 2010. I did not have the classical symptoms for NHL, like night sweats or weight loss, but I was fatigued. On January 4th, 2011 I received my devastating news that I have DLBC NHL.
Just the lumps on my neck
All of the sudden I just couldn't walk without horrible hip pain. Thought it was from when the dog bowled me over outside in the winter time. Took 3 days off of work as I could barely walk to one room to another. Urgent care said it was muscular and 'stretched me out'. Likewise my own doctor a week later pulled and twisted my leg and that and Prednisone got me back walking again with an Xray and MRI scheduled for 2 weeks down the road.
Pain and swelling of Lymph nodes
None; I was diagnosed accidentally, through an unrelated ultrasound - although, in retrospect I realize I was having night sweats.
I felt off for approximately 3 months before my face became swollen. I am a pretty small girl, and when I went into the GP, he did not see the swelling. He did, however, believe me. After seeing veins protrude from my neck, his face grew with concern. He asked if I had night sweats or weight loss, and I did not have anything significant.
Fatigue, chest pain, coughing, back pain, shortness of breath, decreased appetite, weight loss
started with lump on neck. Only one year after the lump that it got diagnosed, and that is because the lymphoma has already spread to the lower abdomen, the intestine, have to remove part of intestine too!
(Temporary) shortness of breath, back pain, abdominal pain, loss of appetite
Large lump on neck.
Lump in neck followed a year later by a "residual" lymphoma in my eyes

Also raised a bit higher off the skin. (((BTW --->>> I finally joined blog4acure this past month after being a regular reader since 2009 when my mother-in-law was diagnosed with cervical cancer/stage4.) )) Also >>>>My 'new' account has been disabled???? I finally decided to create a new blog page since no body would respond via email to me @ the address I had registered at. I hopefully can get someone to delete it! I will keep this one!
No symptoms, and no primary found on skin or otherwise. A solitary pulmonary nodule was found via unrelated CT scan of my chest. Monitoring revealed that the nodule grew from 6.6mm to 1.1cm within 4 months, so surgery was opted. It was the surgical pathology which revealed the cancer, and later the full pathology as melanoma.
I found a lump under my right arm and after many tests, the final result was melanoma.
Just a discoloration on my upper arm; had been there for years, but had developed a black quadrant, and had a "buzzy" feeling on occasion. One caregiver had told me it was "nothing", years ago. When I started this new doctor, he said "let's take a look at it", and sure enough, it was the dreaded melanoma.
Really did not have any - went to see dermatologist for something completely different and was told he did not like a mole I had - biopsy done - call came in - went back for full removal of mole and surrounding area - very very lucky . . .

As they say, ovarian cancer "whispers" and in my mom's case it was true to form. She started eating slightly less, started having slight/occasional heart burn, and was ever so slightly less energetic. Unfortunately, none of us noticed these things until after she was diagnosed. Here are the symptoms/events that led to her diagnosis: The week before my mom went to the doctor she mentioned a few times that her stomach wasn't feeling good and that she wasn't eating too much. That Sunday she felt overly full after having only toast and coffee for breakfast, she continued to feel "bloated" all day and was unable to eat. The next morning her pants were tight around her belly and she was still unable to eat. My sister (who is a nurse) told her to get to the Dr ASAP. Her GP couldn't fit her in until Thursday (3 days later) but my sister told her not to wait and to go to the walk in clinic and request a CT scan. She went and the walk in clinic doc set her up for a CT scan the following day. The next day my moms belly was even bigger than before and she had to stop several times in the parking lot b/c she said she "felt like she was going to pass out" the results were set to her GP who called her in on Wednesday to give her the results. My sister knew then that something was wrong since she suddenly was able to see her on Wednesday. By Thursday she was in to see the doctor who would later become her oncologist.

Flu like. Sinus infection did not go away.
Probly the whole summer before my diagnosis i began to feel fatigued. sometimes id experience feeling like i had low blood sugar and would have to sit down suddenly because i felt so awful. as it progressed i just dragged and dragged. at the time i worked at taco bell and was told i was the best worker but by the time i quit i certainly had dropped out of that position. its not that i was lazy but i was just so exhausted and had to call off alot. finaly i just didnt feel good. it was a jewish holiday and i was supposed to go to the celebration that night but i stayed home instead. i called off work for two weeks and only got worse. it got so bad that i spent the entire day and night sleeping. i was barely eating or drinking. i remember once putting a grape in my mouth and falling asleep immediately after. LOl or the time my friend called me and i asked him to hold a sec. i blew my nose forgot he was on the phone and fell asleep. 20 min later i woke up and saw he was still on the phone. lol i finaly saw a dr and they told me i had strep throat. after taking anti biotics for 10 days and no change i went to the ER. i was dangerously dehydrated, anemic, and had huge lumps on my shins that was tender like a bruise and very feverish. Ill always remember that day cuz i went into that ER and never came back out. it felt like forever waiting on different test results. when the doctor finaly came in and told us i didnt really understand. in fact i didnt even know that leukemia was a cancer. treatments started so fast it all blacked out and i dont really remember any of it. but there was my symptoms.

Fatigue
I guess it all began on my 5th birthday. After months of bruising, nosebleeds, ear infections, chest colds, obnoxiously high fevers, and muscle pains so severe that I was unable to walk, I was diagnosed with ALL (acute lymphocytic leukemia). I went into remission a few months after treatment, and after a 3-year protocol I was pronounced a "full cure" at age 8. For 10 years I experienced absolutely no further symptoms, and just lived an extraordinarily normal & boring life without giving that stupid disease another thought. Then, I broke my arm. No big deal, right? Well, at my 10th annual follow-up checkup, I was told that - suprise! - I had localized osteosarcoma in my left radius (lower arm bone), and was in the early stages of AML (acute myelogenous leukemia). I underwent 1 year of chemo & radiation, as well as surgical removal of the osteogenic sarcoma & a bone graft (limb-salvage a complete success: my arm is still intact!). After going in and out of remission, I had a bone marrow transplant. 1 year later, I was pronounced in "full" remission, and discontinued all treatments the subsequent year. I had no further symptoms. 8 months ago I learned that my AML was no longer in remission. Here we go again :)

Anal Cancer Symptoms

What Anal Cancer Survivors said about their Cancer Symptoms.

Pain and pressure in the anal area
Blood in my stool twice approx 6 weeks before going to be checked out.
I began treatment on 2-20-12. I didn't have any symptoms. Felt great, lots of energy, regularly speedwalked 2-3 miles at a time. Every once in a while my "roid" would act up. Thought all these oncologists must be mistaken....
My symptoms came on fast, and resembled hemorrhoids--rectal bleeding and pain. Except, neither would go away with the use of over-the-counter remeies.
Three days of fresh dark blood
Rectal bleeding (alot), narrow stools, cramping, stomach virus symptoms
In October of 2008, I started having fatigue symptoms and my legs were aching all the time, just to the outside of my shins. I felt full and had a lot of flatuence. My GP did bloodtests and discovered I was very low in the B6 vitamin. When questioned, he said that it was not a symptom (to his knowledge) of anything, although I did read it could have relavancy to cancer diagnosis later. I told him after taking supplements, that I still was not well and asked for a colonoscopy because I had had previous ones and they had removed polyps and told me I should have them once every 3 years, but then when I saw another doctor, she told me not to come back for 5 years, which would have been in 2009. He refused to let me have one. In March I saw the doctor again about irritation in my anal area and he said it was hemorroids. In April 2009, I did my own DRE and felt the lump was quite a bit bigger, then remembered what had happened the previous July. I went to the doctor, my own GP wasn't there, but I saw his colleague who told me it was most likely hemorroids and I insisted he set me up for a colonoscopy. When I called back a week later, they said they had not heard back from the specialist. I called the specialist's office who told me that they had not received the request. Fearful of the competancy of my GP's office, I went to a Walk In Clinic in a nearby town. The doctor was an older man, retired but volunteering his time at the clinic, he did a DRE, clearly told me I had a tumor and had me in to see a doctor in less than three days.... oh the difference between older humbled doctors and arrogant younger doctors who treat you like you are a hypocondriac! In the long run, I take responsibility for having not acted sooner on my own instincts, and I also feel the doctor who 'was' my GP at the time, needs to take responsibility for being so intent on keeping my records up to date and typing into the computer, that he didn't even listen to my symptoms... I recently was in the emerg for another reason and overheard a patient that was registering for care say "I do not want Dr "so and so", if I have to have him, I will leave and go to another hospital." Sometimes we are put in a place for a reason, if only to validate our experience with another. Oh, I had Mitomycin and 5FU - just wondering why that is not listed under Chemotherapy?
Indentation in stool along with blood, went away then came back. Itchy anal area which I had never had. Thought it was hemoroids. Loss of stool one day. Doc checked. Approx. 2cm mass. The ride began.
Originally 2 small hard lumps on the verge of the anus - itchy No blood, no constipation, no pain. Left for 1 year by medical profession. Since biopsy have grown and bleed and hurt. Inguinal lymph node swollen
Rectal bleeding, itching, sciatic pain. (thought my hemorhoid was acting up)
none. I still think the bleeding was from hemorrhoids since the tumor was so small. Occult blood tests always came up negative when I was complaining of bleeding, so we thought it was just hemorrhoids. Tumor discovered by Digital Exam during physical.
In order of occurence: Flatulence; Itching; Sciatica; Tingling; Bleeding; Constipation
One big ole very leaky external tumor between my butt cheeks.
Massive blood discharge followed by smaller discharges, Diaheara, discomfort and a long ago battle with anal HPV

Ron had suffered breathing problems for some time. He was misdiagnosed with a deviated septum a year ago and referred to a specialist. We went back to the doctor only to be told he had an acute sinus infection. In february Ron underwent surgery for a deviated septum and lo and behold they found a massive tumor was the real cause of all the nosebleeds, headaches and general unwellness.

Mesothelioma Cancer Symptoms

What Mesothelioma Cancer Survivors said about their Cancer Symptoms.

chronic cough, shortness of breath, weakness, fatigue, anemia
28 lb Mass of 100's of tumors stemming from my peritoneum. Basically your peritoneum allows your organs to glide around in your abdomen. It produces and absorbs fluid. My peritoneum stopped working correctly and continued to flood my abdomen with cyst pockets. I went for many therapy drains which included abdomen taps into these fluid pockets, draining 4 liters of fluid at a time to remove this toxic fluid. The amount of mass and fluid filled my abdomen to the stage where it blocked, impeded, and mangled organs with my abdomen. Ouch! So painful. Some needle taps could not safely reach through my abdomen and it was necessary to tap through my pelvis to reach some cyst pockets. I continually met with doctors who told me my condition was benign! This fluid glowed like mountain dew. Sometimes it was brown and bloody during my more painful periods. Eventually it mangled my ovaries so severely they did metastasize I lost so much work. I lost my jobs. I couldn't find any doctors to help me, only experimental procedures tapping these fluid pockets. I finally found a wonderful surgeon Dr. Paul Sugarbaker, who not only finally was able to cut this complicated mass from my body but saved my life. Life isn't the same. I have ongoing challenges. But I have learned acceptance. I thank God every day for the days I have. I love life!

Back in September, I was having a sharp pain on my left side by my groin area and I went to the doctor for an annual check up and my doctor told me it was probably an ovarian cyst and they come and they go. Pain sure did go away and I thought it was nothing till one Wednesday at the end of January the pain woke me up out of my sleep and that was when I knew it wasn't just a 'cyst'
There isnt any symptoms with this type of cancer. Its a soft tissue it moves with the body.
heavy bleeding,severe cramps
I did not have any outward signs of a lump or rash etc. I initially noticed a slight ache is my left leg which did not go away. Then, as weeks passed, it was steadily becoming for obvious and the pain, though always an dull ache, at times became very sharp. No amount of Panadol or Anti Flams, even Coedine would touch the pain. My GP had me referred to a Physio as she thought it was Sciatica - so was seeing the Physio and having acupuncture - but this was making my pain worse and was getting unbearable. I notices my toes were now tingly and numb, this was when my GP referred me to hospital, and was admitted. After 8 weeks and been flown and then chopered to 3 different hospitals they found the huge tumor was throughout my whole Left side of pelvis and grown into my sciatic nerve - it was only that pain that indicated I had something wrong with me!!
Almost none, just felt pain in my stomach area

A VERY small sore (grain of sand sized) appeared on my left lateral tongue. It was there for 3 months and a minor nuisance. I thought maybe I had bitten it or ate something sharp like chips. Meds did nothing.. she went back to the same doctor for a 2nd and 3rd time. He told her there was nothing more he could do for her and to stop wasting both his and her time. My daughter lived with this sore on her tongue for over a year. She woke up one morning in horrible pain and her tongue was black. She went to see her personal doctor, She sent Sarah to a ear, nose and throat doctor. That next day he did a biopsy on her tongue. The day after that 2-4-2010 she called me and told me she had cancer. I found a lump in my groin when I was 19 years old. It was diagnosed as a hernia. 8 months later I had surgery and the surgeon said "that's not a hernia."
Swollen lymph node on right side of neck/collarbone
My cancer presented atypically. My very first symptom was not enlarged lymph nodes or fevers or itching, but severe bone pain in my lower back that radiated down into my left leg. This persisted for several weeks before I began experiencing fevers and night sweats. Sed rate was elevated but not extraordinarily. Doctors were baffled. First they thought it was lupus and then RA and then they told me it was all in my head - growing pains or some other lame-ass diagnosis. The symptoms continued and steadily worsened over the next several months before somebody finally had the sense enough to do an MRI and bone scan. These revealed a lesion near the L-4 vertebrate. A biopsy was performed and although the lesion did not have the characteristic features of lumbar osteomyelitis, that was the pathological diagnosis and what I was treated for. I underwent placement of PICC line in order to receive antibiotics for osteomyelitis. A chest x-ray was performed afterward to confirm correct placement of PICC line. It was at this time the radiologist detected lesions on the x-ray. I was referred to the Mayo Clinic. A CAT scan with IV contrast showed extensive mediastinal enlargement, mediastinal and hilar adenopathy, and lesions in the pulmonary parenchyma. The lumbar portion of the CAT scan reveled lymphatic involvement in the spinal region that was previously biopsied. A mediastinoscopy was performed but all tissue that was removed was identified as normal thymus. The surgeon then performed a thoracotomy and biopsied a large perihilar lymph node. The final pathology report showed nodular sclerosing Hodgkin's disease in the the lung and hilar lymph node, making it a stage 4B lesion. It took six months from the onset of symptoms until a definitive diagnosis could be made. My case was so atypical. There was never any palpable lymph nodes until the very end. In fact, the diagnosis was made almost by accident---by a random chest x-ray to determine proper placement of PICC line. I underwent six cycles of ABVD/MOPP and radiation to chest and spine. NED as of April 1992. July 1992 I began to experience night sweats and fevers. Sed rate was elevated but no palpable lymph nodes. CAT scan of chest in August 1992 revealed changes in the mediastinum which was suspicious of recurrence. Underwent biopsy at Mayo Clinic 8/92 but surgeon could find no evidence of disease. Symptomas continued unabated. Lesions evident on liver, but liver biopsy returned normal. A second thoracotomy a week later revealed Hodgkin's. Stage 4B with involvement in liver, spleen and anterior mediastinum. Returned home and received 3 cycles of DECAL salvage therapy followed by autologous stem cell transplant. NED as of 4/1993.
Weight loss (35 Lbs) ... Night sweats... Exhaustion... Stomach pain... my spleen was enlarged by 6 times - my oncologist said if they had to remove it she would like to keep it for medical purposes - I said she could keep it for a doorstop...
With the Hodgkin’s I had a pain in my chest that I tried to ignore. When a guttural cough started, it was thought to be a bronchial problem. Four month later, I started feeling like I was literally drowning and could not get my breath, especially while lying down. I knew there was a deeper problem - but did not want to admit it. Before being diagnosed with the blood cancer I was feeling very dizzy and weak – I had such pain in my bones and knew something was wrong. This went on for months, but my doctor said I was just depressed … even with my history. It took a stroke for him to look deeper. The only way I can describe how I feel at times I feel as if my spine was drying out – or that I need a good oiling! When they did a spinal tap there was very little fluid. I think we need to listen to what our bodies are telling us and hopefully the doctors will too.

Over a period of 3 months, my weight began to shift. Everything was moving north instead of south. I chalked it up to aging and odd things the body did. An ultra sound showed a massive tumor on my right ovary (20 cm). During the week it took to see a specialist, it grew to 44 cm. Surgery took place the next day and it was found that the point of origin was the appendix.
