I found a lump in my left breast while putting on my bra that snaps in the front. I don't think I would of found this if it wasn't for the placement of it being so close to the edge of my breast and close to the snap. Initially I had pain in my knees, back, and hips. My primary physician believed I was starting to develop osteoporosis and arthritis, so I began taking Boniva and other vitamins. My joint pain had not subsided, and about two months later, I developed a deep cough and had difficulty swallowing. My daughter rushed me to the ER, and after I had a chest x-ray, I also had to get a PET scan and MRI. I knew my outlook was not good before we even got the results back. The oncologist found two spots on my lung, and the cancer had spread to two lymph nodes on the other side of my chest wall. Like is said- not good news, but I have an amazing team of physicians, and a supportive family to help me through this. I couldn't go through this without them. My family gives me something to live for!

None that I knew of before diagnosis. About a week before my hernia surgery I thought maybe I was coming down with a cold. My left ear and nostril were plugging up, at first nothing a yawn / blow wouldn't clear up...then...I started taking sudafed to clear it up...and it kind of felt like when I would blow...I couldn't get it out...and if I tried to sniff, I couldn't get it up...pretty frustrating...ALL of this cleared up with the first treatment.
I had no symptoms at all, except for a bump on the top of my head that kept growing. I decided to have it surgically removed, thinking it was a sebaceous cyst or even a hematoma. When I awoke from the surgery I learned that not only had I had a serious reaction to the Ancef (antiobiotic) that they gave me preoperatively and if I had not been intubated I may not have survived, but also that I had a "tumor" and not a cyst. I got the results on March 19th in the morning and I was stunned.

No symptoms, and no primary found on skin or otherwise. A solitary pulmonary nodule was found via unrelated CT scan of my chest. I found a lump under my right arm and after many tests, the final result was melanoma.
Just a discoloration on my upper arm; had been there for years, but had developed a black quadrant, and had a "buzzy" feeling on occasion. One caregiver had told me it was "nothing", years ago. I guess it all began on my 5th birthday. After months of bruising, nosebleeds, ear infections, chest colds, obnoxiously high fevers, and muscle pains so severe that I was unable to walk, I was diagnosed with ALL (acute lymphocytic leukemia). I went into remission a few months after treatment, and after a 3-year protocol I was pronounced a "full cure" at age 8. For 10 years I experienced absolutely no further symptoms, and just lived an extraordinarily normal & boring life without giving that stupid disease another thought. Then, I broke my arm. No big deal, right? Well, at my 10th annual follow-up checkup, I was told that - suprise! - I had localized osteosarcoma in my left radius (lower arm bone), and was in the early stages of AML (acute myelogenous leukemia). I underwent 1 year of chemo & radiation, as well as surgical removal of the osteogenic sarcoma & a bone graft (limb-salvage a complete success: my arm is still intact!). After going in and out of remission, I had a bone marrow transplant. 1 year later, I was pronounced in "full" remission, and discontinued all treatments the subsequent year. I had no further symptoms. 8 months ago I learned that my AML was no longer in remission. Here we go again :)

Mike's lymph nodes in his neck were swollen and doctors thought at first it was something else. But, after a couple of months, Mike knew something wasn't right. So, a surgeon removed one of the lymph nodes and came out of surgery and told me he was 99% sure Mike had some type of cancer. Later, it was discovered that he had cancerous lymph nodes not only in his neck but 2 other places on his body. The doctors at Vanderderbilt then determined it was AML.

Probly the whole summer before my diagnosis i began to feel fatigued. sometimes id experience feeling like i had low blood sugar and would have to sit down suddenly because i felt so awful. as it progressed i just dragged and dragged. at the time i worked at taco bell and was told i was the best worker but by the time i quit i certainly had dropped out of that position. its not that i was lazy but i was just so exhausted and had to call off alot. finaly i just didnt feel good. it was a jewish holiday and i was supposed to go to the celebration that night but i stayed home instead. i called off work for two weeks and only got worse. it got so bad that i spent the entire day and night sleeping. i was barely eating or drinking. i remember once putting a grape in my mouth and falling asleep immediately after. LOl or the time my friend called me and i asked him to hold a sec. i blew my nose forgot he was on the phone and fell asleep. 20 min later i woke up and saw he was still on the phone. lol i finaly saw a dr and they told me i had strep throat. after taking anti biotics for 10 days and no change i went to the ER. i was dangerously dehydrated, anemic, and had huge lumps on my shins that was tender like a bruise and very feverish. Ill always remember that day cuz i went into that ER and never came back out. it felt like forever waiting on different test results. when the doctor finaly came in and told us i didnt really understand. in fact i didnt even know that leukemia was a cancer. treatments started so fast it all blacked out and i dont really remember any of it. but there was my symptoms.

Nagging cough and weird lump above my collarbone.
I was tired all the time, but blamed it on being the mother of three small children and working 2nd shift. I stopped playing with my kids outside or even going outside with them. I'd let them play while I dozed in and out. I also had asthma-like symptoms for over a year and was actually diagnosed with asthma...or should I say "misdiagnosed" with asthma. I had shortness of breath, wheezing, and coughing jags. I had pains in my neck, which I thought were kinks and suddenly one day when I started rubbing my neck on January 21, 2009 it felt like a huge bulge. That whole day I had a horrible feeling after that and finally called to make an appointment with my doctor.

My cancer presented atypically. My very first symptom was not enlarged lymph nodes or fevers or itching, but severe bone pain in my lower back that radiated down into my left leg. This persisted for several weeks before I began experiencing fevers and night sweats. Sed rate was elevated but not extraordinarily. Doctors were baffled. First they thought it was lupus and then RA and then they told me it was all in my head - growing pains or some other lame-ass diagnosis. The symptoms continued and steadily worsened over the next several months before somebody finally had the sense enough to do an MRI and bone scan. These revealed a lesion near the L-4 vertebrate. A biopsy was performed and although the lesion did not have the characteristic features of lumbar osteomyelitis, that was the pathological diagnosis and what I was treated for. I underwent placement of PICC line in order to receive antibiotics for osteomyelitis. A chest x-ray was performed afterward to confirm correct placement of PICC line. It was at this time the radiologist detected lesions on the x-ray. I was referred to the Mayo Clinic. A CAT scan with IV contrast showed extensive mediastinal enlargement, mediastinal and hilar adenopathy, and lesions in the pulmonary parenchyma. The lumbar portion of the CAT scan reveled lymphatic involvement in the spinal region that was previously biopsied. A mediastinoscopy was performed but all tissue that was removed was identified as normal thymus. The surgeon then performed a thoracotomy and biopsied a large perihilar lymph node. The final pathology report showed nodular sclerosing Hodgkin's disease in the the lung and hilar lymph node, making it a stage 4B lesion. It took six months from the onset of symptoms until a definitive diagnosis could be made. My case was so atypical. There was never any palpable lymph nodes until the very end. In fact, the diagnosis was made almost by accident---by a random chest x-ray to determine proper placement of PICC line. I underwent six cycles of ABVD/MOPP and radiation to chest and spine. NED as of April 1992. July 1992 I began to experience night sweats and fevers. Sed rate was elevated but no palpable lymph nodes. CAT scan of chest in August 1992 revealed changes in the mediastinum which was suspicious of recurrence. Underwent biopsy at Mayo Clinic 8/92 but surgeon could find no evidence of disease. Symptomas continued unabated. Lesions evident on liver, but liver biopsy returned normal. A second thoracotomy a week later revealed Hodgkin's. Stage 4B with involvement in liver, spleen and anterior mediastinum. Returned home and received 3 cycles of DECAL salvage therapy followed by autologous stem cell transplant. NED as of 4/1993.

I had been experiencing problems for months and the doctor I was going to just basically blew me off. I told the doctor I was bleeding profusely, I was having pain, and I it felt like there was a mass in my ass! He performed a colonoscopy and he said everthing looked fine but I did have some non-bleeding internal hemorrhoids. I was not happy with the findings because I was bleeding and the pain was getting worse. He then had me swallow a camera and came to the same conclusion that I was fine. I called back and told them everything was not fine. The bleeding was getting worse and the pain was also increasing. They finally sent me to a colon rectal surgeon, who after five minutes of meeting me, did a digital exam and told me he was pretty sure I had anal cancer!

What Mesothelioma Cancer Survivors said about their Cancer Symptoms.

28 lb Mass of 100's of tumors stemming from my peritoneum. Basically your peritoneum allows your organs to glide around in your abdomen. It produces and absorbs fluid. My peritoneum stopped working correctly and continued to flood my abdomen with cyst pockets. I went for many therapy drains which included abdomen taps into these fluid pockets, draining 4 liters of fluid at a time to remove this toxic fluid. The amount of mass and fluid filled my abdomen to the stage where it blocked, impeded, and mangled organs with my abdomen. Ouch! So painful. Some needle taps could not safely reach through my abdomen and it was necessary to tap through my pelvis to reach some cyst pockets. I continually met with doctors who told me my condition was benign! This fluid glowed like mountain dew. Sometimes it was brown and bloody during my more painful periods. Eventually it mangled my ovaries so severely they did metastasize I lost so much work. I lost my jobs. I couldn't find any doctors to help me, only experimental procedures tapping these fluid pockets. I finally found a wonderful surgeon Dr. Paul Sugarbaker, who not only finally was able to cut this complicated mass from my body but saved my life. Life isn't the same. I have ongoing challenges. But I have learned acceptance. I thank God every day for the days I have. I love life!

I did not have any outward signs of a lump or rash etc. I initially noticed a slight ache is my left leg which did not go away. Then, as weeks passed, it was steadily becoming for obvious and the pain, though always an dull ache, at times became very sharp. No amount of Panadol or Anti Flams, even Coedine would touch the pain. My GP had me referred to a Physio as she thought it was Sciatica - so was seeing the Physio and having acupuncture - but this was making my pain worse and was getting unbearable. I notices my toes were now tingly and numb, this was when my GP referred me to hospital, and was admitted. Swollen Lymph Node in my neck.
With the Hodgkin’s I had a pain in my chest that I tried to ignore. When a guttural cough started, it was thought to be a bronchial problem. Four month later, I started feeling like I was literally drowning and could not get my breath, especially while lying down. I knew there was a deeper problem - but did not want to admit it. Before being diagnosed with the blood cancer I was feeling very dizzy and weak – I had such pain in my bones and knew something was wrong. This went on for months, but my doctor said I was just depressed … even with my history. It took a stroke for him to look deeper. The only way I can describe how I feel at times I feel as if my spine was drying out – or that I need a good oiling! When they did a spinal tap there was very little fluid. I think we need to listen to what our bodies are telling us and hopefully the doctors will too.
