What Breast Cancer Survivors said about their Cancer Symptoms.
Lump in breast.
small pea-like knot in breast, VERY close to surface, a doctor once told me it was a clogged pore!
I am very very lucky - I am basically asymptomatic even as bad as my cancer is. The chemo is where I get my side effects and I really cannot complain much about that - yet.
I found a lump myself one month after having my mammogram done.
really weird looking breast, back pains.
Dimple in skin, lump, hard spot in breast
Found a lump at the age of 38
I found a pea size lump around Thanksgiving of 2007. No symptoms at all.
I found a lump in my left breast while putting on my bra that snaps in the front. I don't think I would of found this if it wasn't for the placement of it being so close to the edge of my breast and close to the snap. I also would feel a tingling sensation in the area every now and then, sometimes it would itch a little.
A lump in my left breast the size of a ping pong ball.
The first time in August of 2008 was only found due to my mamogram. This time my breast became inflamed, swollen, red. Very painful.

Large mass in right breast
itchy, sore, rash-like breast/nipple/areola, small lump on self-exam; u/s & mammo non-definitive
I actually didn't have any symptoms other than slight tenderness in my breast, which was identical to the kind I got days before my period. I did have a cyst on my breast (a clogged milk duct), but I had it for decades and pretty much didn't pay attention to it until it started to bother me during the fall of 2007. It was getting bigger, periodically caused sharp (but slight) twinges of pain, and seemed to be coming to a head. Trying to open it by myself was tough, as it was very clogged. One night however, and somewhat ironically, my husband must have intuited something was wrong when he ran upstairs to our bedroom (I was in bed) and insisted that he drain it. I thought he was out of his mind and didn't want him to do it, but he insisted that he should for reasons I didn’t know at the time. When he broke it, copious amounts of this foul and fetid fluid drained out of the duct and the cyst disappeared. Months later, after my diagnosis and lumpectomy, the surgeon told us that my husband may have saved my life, as the cancer would have spread if the clogged duct grew larger and wasn’t drained.

No symptoms, and no primary found on skin or otherwise. A solitary pulmonary nodule was found via unrelated CT scan of my chest. Monitoring revealed that the nodule grew from 6.6mm to 1.1cm within 4 months, so surgery was opted. It was the surgical pathology which revealed the cancer, and later the full pathology as melanoma.
I found a lump under my right arm and after many tests, the final result was melanoma.
Just a discoloration on my upper arm; had been there for years, but had developed a black quadrant, and had a "buzzy" feeling on occasion. One caregiver had told me it was "nothing", years ago. When I started this new doctor, he said "let's take a look at it", and sure enough, it was the dreaded melanoma.

As they say, ovarian cancer "whispers" and in my mom's case it was true to form. She started eating slightly less, started having slight/occasional heart burn, and was ever so slightly less energetic. Unfortunately, none of us noticed these things until after she was diagnosed. Here are the symptoms/events that led to her diagnosis: The week before my mom went to the doctor she mentioned a few times that her stomach wasn't feeling good and that she wasn't eating too much. That Sunday she felt overly full after having only toast and coffee for breakfast, she continued to feel "bloated" all day and was unable to eat. The next morning her pants were tight around her belly and she was still unable to eat. My sister (who is a nurse) told her to get to the Dr ASAP. Her GP couldn't fit her in until Thursday (3 days later) but my sister told her not to wait and to go to the walk in clinic and request a CT scan. She went and the walk in clinic doc set her up for a CT scan the following day. The next day my moms belly was even bigger than before and she had to stop several times in the parking lot b/c she said she "felt like she was going to pass out" the results were set to her GP who called her in on Wednesday to give her the results. My sister knew then that something was wrong since she suddenly was able to see her on Wednesday. By Thursday she was in to see the doctor who would later become her oncologist.

I had a mini-stroke on March 3, 2011. Dr. found a nodule on my thyroid while looking at my caratoid arteries for reason of stroke. I had a fine needle biopsy of thyroid on March 10 and was called the next day with diagnosis of thyroid cancer and a hole in my heart called PFO that caused the mini-stroke. I am thankful for the mini-stroke or I would not have known I had cancer. Looking back I did have symptoms of weight gain, dry skin, brittle nails, and feeling tired. I thought it was because I was older. LOL
Sudden itching and spreading pain in my left leg moving to my right arm within 12 hrs, then to my right leg, converting to extreme pain. Unable to sleep for over 36 hrs. Dr. expected brain involvement, ordered MRI. No indications of disease. Prescribed gabapentin, was like a miracle. I think because I could sleep. Symptoms abated for some time then returned. I went back to my PCP who had been on this the whole time. He sent me to a neurologist (who was awful) that ran a bunch of torture tests. He then sent me for an MRI of my neck. This is perhaps the best part of the story. When I met with him about the results he coldly said this is not neurological. Nothing else! I had an appointment with my PCP about two weeks later. Upon reading the report he said you have a large nodule on your thyroid (WTF). What a crappy doctor that neurologist was! Didn't say a thing or send a report to my PCP... My PCP went into high gear and ordered an Ultrasound, followed by a biopsy. Bad Findings, consult, and surgery. Great Surgeon, Dr. Glackin. Kind, Listens, Patient, Tender. Both Dr's PCP Levin and Surgeon Dr. Glackin visited and made sure orders were followed and I was comfortable after surgery and the next day. I thought that only happened on TV.

What Mesothelioma Cancer Survivors said about their Cancer Symptoms.
chronic cough, shortness of breath, weakness, fatigue, anemia
28 lb Mass of 100's of tumors stemming from my peritoneum. Basically your peritoneum allows your organs to glide around in your abdomen. It produces and absorbs fluid. My peritoneum stopped working correctly and continued to flood my abdomen with cyst pockets. I went for many therapy drains which included abdomen taps into these fluid pockets, draining 4 liters of fluid at a time to remove this toxic fluid. The amount of mass and fluid filled my abdomen to the stage where it blocked, impeded, and mangled organs with my abdomen. Ouch! So painful. Some needle taps could not safely reach through my abdomen and it was necessary to tap through my pelvis to reach some cyst pockets. I continually met with doctors who told me my condition was benign! This fluid glowed like mountain dew. Sometimes it was brown and bloody during my more painful periods. Eventually it mangled my ovaries so severely they did metastasize I lost so much work. I lost my jobs. I couldn't find any doctors to help me, only experimental procedures tapping these fluid pockets. I finally found a wonderful surgeon Dr. Paul Sugarbaker, who not only finally was able to cut this complicated mass from my body but saved my life. Life isn't the same. I have ongoing challenges. But I have learned acceptance. I thank God every day for the days I have. I love life!

What Hodgkins Lymphoma Cancer Survivors said about their Cancer Symptoms.
Lump on neck, night sweats, itchy skin, tired, chills
Lower back pain which became constant, responded well to NSAIDs and panadol which is probably why I put up with it for so long. Also got fevers, night sweats, mildy pruritic skin.
Most notably, I was itching horribly, and I lost 25+ lbs. Also, I wasn't sleeping and had vivid nightmares and night sweats when I did. I had a lumpy neck, fatigue, a cough that lasted for months, and finally, my left lung had collapsed (which lead to the diagnosis).
With the Hodgkin’s I had a pain in my chest that I tried to ignore. When a guttural cough started, it was thought to be a bronchial problem. Four month later, I started feeling like I was literally drowning and could not get my breath, especially while lying down. I knew there was a deeper problem - but did not want to admit it. Before being diagnosed with the blood cancer I was feeling very dizzy and weak – I had such pain in my bones and knew something was wrong. This went on for months, but my doctor said I was just depressed … even with my history. It took a stroke for him to look deeper. The only way I can describe how I feel at times I feel as if my spine was drying out – or that I need a good oiling! When they did a spinal tap there was very little fluid. Over a period of 3 months, my weight began to shift. Everything was moving north instead of south. I chalked it up to aging and odd things the body did. An ultra sound showed a massive tumor on my right ovary (20 cm). During the week it took to see a specialist, it grew to 44 cm. Surgery took place the next day and it was found that the point of origin was the appendix.
