August 2004 tumor removed from pancreas and took part of pancreas with it and removed the spleen. My father was told that he would not have to have chemo and that he would live a normal life that they got all the cancer and that was it. We should have made him get a second opinion you see the cancer that he was diagnosed with is very rare about 1 in 25 million people. the doctors didn't know enough about it. well two years later he started having the same symtoms as before very low blood sugars (he is not diabetic) so when he went back to the doctors they discovered that he had several very large tumors on and in his liver. We took him to MAYO's where he had a seven hour long surgery and had several complications, PE, and phrenic artery bleed. We know now that this cancer can not be cured or treated with chemo and that the tumors will be comming back. We just got back from Mayo's this last week and they found 2 more new spots on his CT. We go back in Jan. He is not ready for another surgery it has only been 7mos since the last one. I would love to hear from any one who knows anything about this cancer.

First surgery on 6.28.11 didn't obtain clean margins so a re-excision was made on 7.8.11. I got a MRSA infection which landed me in the hospital for five days in September and later, 10.14.11 my surgeron reopened me to clean out the incision and I was sent home with a wound vac (and home care nurses 3 x a week). Wound vac was ended on 12.21.11 but open incision of about 1" x 1" remained. Still healing as of 3.4.12 but oh, so much better.

I had a biospy first & it turned out positive of cancer. I then had another surgery, to check the lymph nodes, thank God, they were neg., after that one I got staff infection & boy it was worst pain than the surgery itself. I was on 1000 mg of infection for almost 2 wks. Well, after I found out I had cancer, I was in shock for around a mon. or so, so were my parents, we could not look at each other without crying. It felt like I had been given a death sentence. You know, when you hear the big "C" word, everyone thinks, the big "D" word & I'm here to tell you, it's not always true. Then one day I was talking to a friend & she told me, Denise, you have to take hold of this thing & show it your not a quiter. That your gonna fight this with all you got, cause if you don't, it'll take you over & it will win. Well, needless to say, something just clicked & I woke up & from then on I fought this thing & 3 years later, here I am.

The most painful (and I'm not joking at all) of this process other than standing up in the middle of the night to walk..was the dye injection for the sentinal node biopsy. Its inhuman to put anyone through this procedure while they are still lucid.
I opted to have both my breasts removed and my ovaries. Reconstructed. Doing OK with that right now. But still not the same. At least I'm alive for kids.

Then had my ovaries & tubes removed in September. Didn't feel quite like myself for 2 weeks. Was worried about menopause, but nothing too bad. Just hot flashes, but I've had those for years! They just happen more often.

April 7, 2010 - radical hysterectomy with lymph node and omentum removal. Ovarian cancer discovered in surgery. Surgery recovery was very easy for me.

The first was a laparoscopy to diagnose disease;
The second was an attempt to debulking which was aborted due to tumor size.
The third surgery happened after 4 cycles of chemotherapy. It was a total hysterectomy with optimal cytoreduction.

My surgery date was on October 6, 2010. The surgeon did a lobectomy on my right lung, where the two spots were located. My side effects were that I had extreme pain in my side, difficulty breathing, and even pain in my right arm. The pain from the surgery went away after about two weeks, but I still have shortness of breath because I am missing part of my lung- go figure.
Craniotomy, 8/8/1986
lobectomy 9/24/09,massive infection removal & lobectomy 11/3/09
The surgeon, an excellent surgeon, recommended a lobectomy on the right lung. Surgery was performed on July 13, 2009. The surgeon found the nodule was cancerous and had grown in an area of the lung damaged by a fungal infection, cryptocaucus. My recuperation period in the hospital was twelve days, the release prolonged due to a pneumothorax (collapsed lung). The treatment for this was the most painful thing I have EVER encountered. It's called Pleurodesis and consists of putting one of any number of chemicals (sclerosing agents or sclerosants) into the pleural space by way of the existing chest tube. The sclerosant irritates the pleurae which results in inflammation (pleuritis) and causes the pleurae to stick together. I don't recommend this to cure boredom but it did work!!

Surgery #1 July 1st 2011. Surgery #2 July 18th 2011.

Hysterectomy - very slow recovery because of infection. Brain surgery because of ruptured tumor. Honestly the worse thing yet. I as well had both parathyroids and Thyroid glands removed with five accompanied tumors that were attached to them. Sheesh...when u write it all out like that, it makes me wonder why in the heck I am still here? I am still suffering side effects. We cannot get the meds. leveled out. I have been known to get up, sit down for a bite of breakfast and wake up three hours later with toast still in my mouth and hand. Very sleepy! But alive!!!

Colostomy surgery 6/08
Dec 17th, 2004: removal of rectum/anus. Bowel removal. August,2008: spleen removal, coxyx removal, tumor removed from arm. November 14, 2011: lymph node removal.
I had a full colectomy on 9/13/05, at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. I was given a temporary illeostomy until my small intestine was long enough to reach my rectum and a J-Pouch was able to be formed. The surgery for me lasted 9 hours. I was given anastesia. Originally, it was supposed to be a laporascopic surgery but the doctor was unable to perform the surgery in that matter. An incision was made right under my breast bone all the way down to right above my vaginal area. When the incision was stapled I had a total of 56 staples. After surgery, it was very hard to sit up and get out of bed. I spent a total of 8 days in the hospital and was given plenty of pain medication. The doctors and nurses were excellent and really did the best they could to help me recover and keep me as comfortable as possible. I was not used to having an illeostomy bag with a stoma, but as the time went by I adjusted and knew it was not going to be permanent. Most of all, I knew it saved my life. My colon had over 600 polyps on it by the time I was 18, ranging from tiny to big and they were indeed cancerous. I waited four years to have surgery due to the colon not being fully grown when I was 14. After the colon was removed, I did not undergo chemotherapy because my doctor felt all the cancer was gone. Tests were done and it was confirmed, I was cancer free!
Tonsillectomy and a colostomy. The colostomy was the result of complications from my chemo. A colostomy is used associated with colon cancer Not Head and Neck Cancer.

December 3rd 2010- scheduled for a "SILS" procedure: single incision laparoscopic surgery to remove "Albert", supposed to be back to work in 4 weeks. Yeah, right... Wake up to the Dr telling me he had to do an open surgery so he could get at my liver and lymph nodes. Some lymph nodes removed but liver has too many lesions to do anything. My polyp was trying to punch thru the colon and grab my gall bladder, luckily it wasn't successful. Went from being "no big deal polyp" to "you have stage 4 colon cancer" Was told an oncologist would be in to see me the next day. What Tonsillectomy Surgery Cancer Survivors said about their Cancer Surgeries
Rt. Tonsillectomy and Rt. neck dissection done on 8-10-09
Surgery was conducted on Nov 8th 2010 and lasted 8 1/2 hours. Surgery consisted of partial tonsilectomy (left tonsil) and removal of 40 lymph nodes. Remained in ICU 12 days; 10 days heavily sedated due to "being a bad patient" (combative).
Could not drink liquids without them shooting through my nostrils for 2 weeks. I could manage one small ice chip but not two. A PET scan revealed one lymph node that probably was malignant. This necessitated radiation treatment.
26 Feb 2008 radical neck dissection of right side of neck, Bilateral Tonsillectomy. The neck dissection took the right jugglar, muscle, 80 nodes, the 12th spinal accessory nerve, which paralyzed my right trapezius muscle which has resulted in the right should slumping forward somewhat, asome range of motion issues. The bilateral tonsillectomy, too the tonsillar pillar and to ensure that I had a clean margin, around the right tonsil, the 5th nerve was removed which handle the function of the right side of my tounge, which has faciltated some difficulties in swallowing.
Surgery was done December 27th. Removal of right tonsil and neck dissection removed 34 lymph nodes which 3 were were positive. There are some slight issues with my shoulder and arm not having full range of motion but this is being worked out through physical therapy. 7 weeks post surgery and the swallowing is totally back. Had to have 5 teeth removed prior to radiation treatment though and that was a minor setback.

I have had five different surgery's, for four different cancer issues. Complete exploratory, splenectomy,(little side effects). Five inches of rib was taken right above left breast.
Surgery #1 July 1st 2011. Surgery #2 July 18th 2011.
